Job Summary:
The Lead Histology Technologist prepares cytology, surgical, grossing area, and autopsy specimens, biopsies and slides for microscopic study of tissues or organisms by the Pathologist. The Lead Histology Technologist will provide direction and delegation of workload and will ensure efficiency and quality in all aspects. The Lead will assist with ensuring departmental goals, initiatives and regulatory compliance are achieved. They perform tasks under strict guidelines and regulations of the New York State Department of Health and other regulatory agencies.
Responsibilities:
- Performs all duties described in the Lead Histology Technician job description.
- Serves as a liaison and resource between department staff and supervisor for technical and operational support, patient care, regulatory compliance, policies and procedures.
- Assists with projects, quality assurance activities, customer service, department goals, and regulatory compliance duties assigned.
- Prepares and performs routine and complex biological staining techniques.
- Assists Pathologist with setting up surgical specimens, gross description, etc.
- Prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures for Pathologist.
- Embeds, cuts, and stains tissue for Histologic, Immunohistochemical and/or Immunofluorescence examination,
- Prepares, cut and stain frozen sections.
- Participate in Quality Assurance activities for Specimen fixation, processing, microtomy; Reagent selection, preparation, storage, disposal; Method selection, validation, documentation; Quality control; Safety
- Maintains and operates equipment and instruments.
- Maintains all records, updates, and standard operating procedures, as required by New York State Department of Health regulations.
- Enters information such as demographics and order numbers into automated systems.
- Attends pertinent seminars to remain abreast of methodology and instrumentation in the field.
- Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
Experience:
Minimum of four years of experience where the primary function of the position was performing histologic procedures in a hospital or health care setting or in a pathology lab.
Education:
Associate Degree. Bachelor Degree preferred.
Licenses / Certifications:
License and current registration as a Certified Histological Technician, Pathologists’ Assistant, Clinical Laboratory Technician, or Clinical Laboratory Technologist issued by the New York State Education Department.
