We have a part-time position available for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for our clinic in West Des Moines, Iowa. UCS Healthcare is a CARF-accredited, non-profit health care organization based in West Des Moines, Iowa with additional offices in Knoxville and Ankeny. UCS also operates 11 medication units across the state offering medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opiate/alcohol addiction. We offer a competitive hourly wage and a Saturday shift differential on top of your base payrate for shifts on Saturdays.

Reports To: Nursing Supervisors

Job Summary: To provide comprehensive medical care within scope of practice to clinic patients by cooperating with other medical professionals in a team environment, while maintaining professional medical standards. Demonstrates commitment to professional growth and competence.

As part of UCS Healthcare, team members will follow all laws and regulations, including those at the Federal, State, and Local level. They will also adhere to all UCS policies and procedures, including patient confidentiality, HIPAA/ 42CFR part 2, and all CARF requirements. All team members will operate in alignment with UCS Healthcare's core values, work effectively in a team environment, provide or support patient-centered services, and strive to assist UCS Healthcare in delivering the highest level of care.

Essential Functions:

Communication with providers and patients (40%)

  • Communicates effectively, practices effective problem identification and resolution skills and uses lines of authority appropriately.
  • Demonstrates a team approach to care.
  • Triage phone calls appropriately reporting to RN or Physician.
  • Performs assessment/data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner within scope of practice.
  • Accurately receives and follows through on written and verbal orders from providers.
  • Scheduling.

Documentation (30%)

  • Accurately calls in/e-scribes medications in a timely manner.
  • Documents accurately in a timely manner.
  • Document program specific data collection (Methasoft).
  • Document program specific data into Care Logic.
  • Scanning and uploading documents.
  • Demonstrates competence in specified computer applications.
  • Obtaining consents.
  • Point of Entry.
  • Coordinate the functions to maintain and distribute accurate medical records.

Patient care in all areas (30%)

  • Implements care in a knowledgeable, skillful, consistent and continuous manner by utilization of pre-determined standards and evidenced-based practices that define the structure, process and desired patient outcomes.
  • Promotes medical assisting practices and patient care that is effective in terms of quality, cost, and patient satisfaction.
  • Rooms patients and accurately assesses vital signs and reason for visit.
  • Administers medications and evaluates their effectiveness.
  • Performs venipuncture while maintaining safety standards.
  • Performs efficiently in emergency situations following established protocols.
  • Collection of urinalyses.
  • Perform Breathalyzer testing.
  • Keep dosing area and urinalysis restroom clean and orderly.
  • Inform nursing staff of client needs.
  • Count patient prescription pills and notify nurse of inconsistencies.
  • Medication Unit Specific Care
    • Preparing and dispensing physician prescribed doses of medications. This includes the preparation of "take home doses" (described as "Take Out doses" or "TOs" in Methasoft.)
    • Using the Methasoft software to dose patients, control and monitor inventory, and generate and utilize reports in order to aid in the monitoring and treatment of MAT patients.
    • Ordering medications through our preferred wholesaler when pharmacy stock is depleted when assigned by PIC.
    • Providing pharmaceutical counseling/education to patients and staff.
    • Consulting with clinic physicians and staff on pharmacology/pharmacokinetic questions concerning agency patients.
    • Ensure patient photographs are up to date in Methasoft; take photographs at intake and as necessary.
    • Maintaining and cleaning the LabTec methadone pump.

Minimum Education Skills and Experience:

  • Current and unrestricted LPN license in the state of Iowa
  • CPR certificate
  • Venipuncture skills required

Preferred Education, Skills & Experience:

  • 1 year of nursing experience

Supervisory Responsibility: NA

Physical Requirements

  • Able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Able to bend, stoop, squat, crouch throughout the day.
  • A valid driver's license is required (an Iowa driver's license is required within 30 days of hire) and liability insurance or an equivalent means of personal transportation and coverage as travel within the state of Iowa may be necessary.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.

Work Schedule: Saturdays 6:00 am-2:00 pm. We also offer a Saturday shift differential on top of your base payrate for shifts on Saturdays.
