Ecotone, LLC. is an innovative and growing design/build ecological restoration company. We are looking for a mid-level natural resources focused scientist to support our growing Project Delivery Team with natural resource inventories, design evaluation, permitting and monitoring efforts. This position will report directly to the Manager of Natural Resources.

Supporting our team of Project Managers, Engineers, Scientists, Construction Crews and Business Development staff, this role may be involved in the following (but not limited to) types of projects including shoreline, stream, wetland, floodplain restoration (tidal and nontidal), dam removal, stormwater management, GIS modeling contracts, and development of impact/permitting/mitigation need consulting.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support communication with Federal, State and Local agencies for project permitting needs.
  • Conduct environmental consulting efforts, including completing natural resource investigations and vegetation surveys; preparing wetland and forest stand delineations; developing forest conservation plans; and drafting wetland and waterway construction permit applications; local permitting (such as forest conservation permitting).
  • Conduct post-construction field monitoring for permitted sites and complete as-built surveys; analyze and report on the data.
  • Draft reports and plans, as appropriate, for assessments, investigations, and delineations that document methods and analysis.
  • Assist in the preparation of grants, mitigation banking documents and TMDL credit evaluations.
  • Assist in the development of Site-Specific Mitigation Plans (SSMP’s) for mitigation and nutrient banks.
  • Mentorship of entry-level and junior staff members.
  • Support multiple projects concurrently.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Geomorphology, Natural Resources, Biology, Ecology, or related field.
  • 5 to 8 years of professional experience in a relevant role.
  • Understanding of the environmental delineations and permitting processes for both tidal and non-tidal projects (including streams).
  • Understanding of environmental mitigation practices, standards, documentation.
  • An in-depth understanding of state level 401 permitting, federal 404 permitting, jurisdictional determination differences across different state and corps jurisdictions, familiarity with the NEPA process and documentation.
  • Experience preparing permit applications in multiple states and United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Districts.
  • Understanding of post construction monitoring performance standards, methods and reporting for a minimum of tidal and non-tidal wetlands.
  • Proficiency with GPS mobile units and ESRI programs (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Desktop).
  • Ability to work successfully independently and with a team.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Ability to read plans/contouring/construction drawings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification(s) as Forest Conservation Qualified Professional or Professional Landscape Architect or Professional Wetlands Scientist (or equivalent) or Professional Forester.
  • Experience and understanding of stream and wetland restoration, including assessment data methods, post construction data collection methods, performance standards (such as geomorphology assessments).
  • Experience with stream and shoreline TMDL calculation and field methods such as BANCS assessments.
