Founded in 1753 and located in the heart of historic downtown, First Presbyterian remains a central feature of Statesville, and seeks the leadership of a Director of Music in our worship of God. Offering a traditional worship experience, the church is blessed with musical instruments of exceptional quality, including a recently and fully refurbished 1925 Casavant organ, Yamaha grand piano, spinet harpsichord and handbells.

Terms of Employment: At least 30 hours per week up to 40 (depending upon the candidate), with some weeks going beyond this due to seasonal / liturgical requirements. For those applying as Director of Music & Organist, we will accommodate the schedule to provide hours for organ rehearsal.

Supervision: The Director of Music Ministry falls under the direct supervision of the Senior Pastor and works closely with the Worship Committee. He/She shall be responsible to Session through the Worship and Personnel Committees.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Music Degree, Sacred Music Degree or certificate is preferred, but not required.
• Should possess a wide range of knowledge in sacred music and worship planning.
• Should have the ability to profess a theologically sound articulation of Christian faith (though not necessarily the Reformed tradition, of which we are a part).
• Willingness to represent the Reformed tradition through music during worship and in other ministry opportunities.
• Should demonstrate a high level of musicianship and competency in choral/instrumental conducting, and ability to play for and lead rehearsals.
• Candidates should have the ability to work with members of the staff, congregation, and community across a variety of generational and cultural backgrounds.
• Should be able to engage spiritually, imagine creatively, and lead proficiently.
• Must undergo and pass a background check.

Audition is required. Candidates will be asked to rehearse a piece that the choir knows well (10- 15 minutes) and bring a piece to introduce to the choir (10-15 minutes). Candidate should provide the accompanist (if needed) with this piece in advance. If applying as organist/director, you will be asked to play and direct the choir, as well as share a musical selection.

Responsibilities:

• Lead and direct established choirs, recruit new members and assist choir members in developing their musical abilities. Rehearsals are typically once a week. (Adult Sanctuary Choir, Youth (6th grade and above) and Children’s (Pre-schoolers through 5th grade) Choirs, & Handbell Choir)
• Grow the music program, provide musical direction and opportunities for all who are interested in participating and developing their skills.
• Select music for worship services in conjunction with the Senior Pastor
• Review, select, and purchase music within the budget allotted.
• Maintain a calendar with the church staff of weekly, monthly, and yearly opportunities for musical engagement and development.
• Plan and prepare for special services – Cantatas, Children’s Christmas program, etc. by selecting the music and leading and directing the music for these services.
• Assist in preparation for and leadership with Preschool Chapels, as the calendar allows.
• Attend Staff Meetings and Worship Committee Meetings
• Meet deadlines for weekly preparation of the Order for Worship and the monthly publication of “The Fourth Creek Journal” (the church newsletter).
• Procure and oversee the efforts of other musicians including soloists and instrumentalists within established budget parameters.
• Oversee the maintenance of the organ, pianos, bells, music library, robes, and other FPC musical assets.
• Assist Senior Pastor in planning music for worship services throughout the year, which may include playing for weddings and funerals.

• Demonstrate strong musical leadership skills, including choral and instrumental conducting
• Have ability to innovate and bring creative concepts to the music program
• Maintain confidentiality at all times
• Possess excellent communication and team-building skills
• Possess strong organizational skills
• Possess strong piano proficiency

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $32,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
