POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working with a high degree of independence and under general direction, coordinate major activities in medical and related technical areas. Manage day to day histology laboratory processes and preparing multiple peer and non peer-reviewed publications as tangible outcomes of the Reconstructing Vasal Anatomy (REVA) contract N98022-SPARC. This contract requires the research findings to be presented through the Stimulating Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions (SPARC) network, independent histology publications and presentations at professional meetings. Direct a team of researchers, technicians, writers, editors and graphic designers. The purpose of the program is to perform research to develop novel solutions that improve the function and performance of implanted medical devices in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system. Specifically, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a team of researchers led by Case Western Reserve University and Duke University a 3-year contract for an initiative to speed the development of therapeutic devices that control electrical activity in nerves to improve chronic medical conditions. The NIH REVA contract will allow researchers to map the body’s vagus nerve using the latest high-resolution imaging technology. The team’s goal will be to show how the vagus nerve tracts to most organs in the torso, including the heart, lungs, pancreas, stomach and intestines, to control and sense the body’s inner workings. Electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve has been used to treat epilepsy, rheumatoid arthritis and heart failure, among many other conditions. This is a full-time position and is responsible for guiding and disseminating the findings of the research. The 3-year contract is a unique mechanism and requires rapid turnaround times, frequent and rigorous monthly reporting, and milestone achievements on which continued funding is contingent.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide input and recommendations to principal investigator regarding reporting significant milestones in the REVA research projects. (10%)
  • Coordinate major activities of laboratory/ research including staffing, teaching, and instructing others in research techniques, scheduling and mentoring. (20%)
  • Perform analyses on histology images and co-register them with microCT and serial microscopy volumes. (15%)
  • Perform complex quantitative analytical procedures. Examples include developing software algorithms for image processing, tractography and analysis (15%)
  • Teach or instruct others in histology research techniques. Supervise lab staff to keep histology skills current. (10%)
  • Co-author research projects, draft sections of reports and presentations. (10%)
  • Assist in developing histology procedures and coordinate information with other teams as needed. (10%)


NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)
  • Monitor compliance with standards set forth by IRB and other data security standards. (5%)


CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow. (Frequent)

Internal: Biomedical Engineering and Medicine with 15 PIs and faculty to share information among REVA teams. (Frequent)

External: Interface with REVA team members at Duke, the Cleveland VA and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Limited contact with vendors to address major equipment or supplies issues. (Frequent)

Students: Contact with student employees, interns and volunteers to review protocols, research data and exchange information. (Frequent)


SUPERVSORY RESPONSIBILITY

Supervises research assistant 2’s and technicians when needed in the absence of research assistant 3.


REQUIREMENTS

Experience: 5 to 8 years of related experience required.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, histology, chemistry or biology; prefer National Certification as a Medical or Histology Technologist, HT(ASCP).


REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within histology.
  • Relies on instructions and newly developed SOPs to perform the functions of the job.
  • Ability to operate histology laboratory equipment including tissue processors, micrometers, immunohistochemical and special staining instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of and strict adherence to laboratory safety protocols and policies.
  • Oversight of scrupulous data recording and scientific ethics among staff.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.
  • Excellent problem solver.


WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory and cubicle/office environment. May have exposure to hazards, including hazardous chemicals. Occasional on campus travel for final review sessions and overtime when on deadline for submissions. This position is not eligible for the staff hybrid work program.
