The Research Associate 1 supports research activities under the direction of a principal investigator (Audrey Harkness, PhD) or designee of the principal investigator. Dr. Harkness’ research team is focused on addressing HIV and behavioral health (mental health/substance use) disparities affecting key populations affected by the HIV epidemic, with a focus on Latino men who have sex with men (Latino MSM).

The RA1 will be primarily tasked with supporting two projects:

SOMOS Alianza: We developed a strategic alliance of researchers, implementers (i.e., people who provide HIV prevention and treatment services to Latino MSM), and community members who meet monthly to discuss implementation research and practice to improve the reach of HIV prevention and treatment services to Latino MSM in Miami, FL, Orlando, FL, and San Juan, PR. The RA1 will coordinate these meetings and assist with all administrative aspects of this strategic alliance, including but not limited to making meeting agendas, taking minutes, scheduling meetings, collecting data, cleaning data, etc. JUNTOS Referral Network Project: We are developing an app/website with comprehensive information about HIV services in South Florida. The RA1 will assist with meeting scheduling, recruitment and scheduling support, and other support tasks as needed.

The RA1 will support additional projects, as needed, including:

Dime Más and Peer Ambassador Study: We are doing a pilot study to evaluate the best intervention to improve uptake of PrEP, HIV testing, and behavioral health (i.e., mental health and substance use treatment) among Latino MSM. The pilot study will have three conditions, which we will compare to see which is best for increasing uptake of PrEP, HIV testing, and behavioral health treatment:

Dime Más (experimental condition): This involves intensive outreach to help Latino MSM get HIV-prevention and behavioral health treatment.

Peer Ambassador Stories (experimental condition): This involves sharing real stories of Latino MSM getting PrEP, HIV testing, and behavioral health treatment to try to normalize and destigmatize using these services.

Standard Outreach (control condition): This involves giving non-tailored referral lists to Latino MSM for PrEP, HIV testing, and behavioral health services.

The RA1 will help with protocol development, coordination with the community partner, recruitment, scheduling participants, tracking participants through all stages of the research study, IRB, data collection and management, creating REDCap surveys, basic statistical and qualitative analyses, administer participant payment and petty cash reimbursement, and other support tasks as needed.

REACH Equity Team Overall Support: The RA1 may be asked to provide general support to the REACH Equity Team (the PI’s lab) such as research team meeting coordination, support with onboarding students, assistance with reimbursements and petty cash, tracking compliance, and coordinating space within SONHS

Primary duties and responsibilities:

• Contribute to applied research activities by collecting and analyzing data, maintaining databases, etc.

• Understand and interpret research protocols and procedures.

• Assist with developing and implementing standard operating procedures for projects

• Carry out research activities in accordance with IRB approved protocols.

• Assist with preparing materials for IRB review and processing materials that have been IRB approved

• Advance knowledge related to job duties through continued education, training and/or research, as assigned by supervisor

• Ensure all research is undertaken according to good research practice and guidance.

• Assist with study start up (e.g., assembling protocols, supporting training activities, assisting with building data collection materials and programming REDCap)

• Assist with REDCap setup and managing REDCap data

• Assist with interview, focus group and theater testing coordination and facilitation

• Order supplies and materials

• Daily management of study data

• Coordinate day-to-day study management

• Support recruitment efforts (e.g., developing recruitment materials, conducting active community outreach as requested by supervisor)

• Supports qualitative analyses via coding (directed by the PI); supports quantitative analyses via data cleaning and analyses

• Assists with NIH progress reports and UM sponsored award reports

• Complete weekly individual meetings with supervisor and prepare detailed agenda for each individual meeting

• Prepare agendas for project specific meetings and lab meetings

• Take minutes and project specific and lab meetings and distribute to team members

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Able to convey information effectively.

• Able to work independently (i.e., able to receive weekly guidance and self-manage schedule to ensure tasks are completed without daily supervision).

• Able to be proactive and anticipate the needs of the projects (i.e., work “ahead” of tasks being assigned)

• Able to follow verbal and written instructions.

• Able to problem solve (i.e., able to self-learn new skills without instruction, able to seek other resources to enhance skills and address issues)

• Very strong attention to detail

• Strong analytical skills.

• Bilingual (Spanish/English).

• Experience preparing documents for IRB submission, NIH progress reports (preferred, not required)

• Experience with qualitative interviewing and analysis (preferred, not required)

• Experience with quantitative data cleaning and analyses (e.g., preparing syntax for data cleaning) (preferred, not required)

• Experience setting up REDCap surveys (preferred, not required)

• Knowledgeable about local Latino MSM community and recruitment strategies for reaching this community and engaging in research

• Comfortable working with videochat platforms (including Zoom, Microsoft teams) and other electronic project management programs (e.g., Microsoft Planner)

This position is a full-time in-person position at the School of Nursing and Health Studies on the University of Miami Campus. The hours for the position are Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm, unless explicitly agreed upon by the employee and supervisor in advance.
