Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Associate III for the Institute for Health (IFH) within the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research. Under the direction of the Director of the Center for Health Services Research (CHSR), the Associate Director for Research of CHSR, and/or senior data analysts, the Research Associate III provides data-analytic support to a large and complex program of federally funded research and will construct statistically advanced programs in SAS and other software to link and analyze large and complex health care datasets, including national Medicaid and Medicare insurance claims, private insurance claims, National Death Index data, and other sources representing tens of millions of individuals followed over multiple years. Works with Center investigators, senior staff and collaborators to implement sophisticated, longitudinal statistical programming and data analyses for health services research and outcomes studies evaluating the delivery, utilization, and outcomes associated with prescription drugs and health care provided across a range of settings, including inpatient, outpatient, and nursing facilities. Analyses will include application of advanced techniques in SAS software for longitudinal data analysis, data linkage across large datasets, construction of medication supply calendars and other measures of health care use over time, reporting descriptive statistics, and statistical modeling of outcomes. The Research Associate III will clean and manage data, including conducting quality control analyses; create and maintain analytic workplans and documentation; construct analytic variables; apply appropriate statistical modeling methods; and participate in the interpretation and preparation of results for publications and presentations. The position requires high-level skills in data management and statistical programming, with expertise in SAS programming and strong experience with very large datasets, preferably entailing longitudinal analyses and application of advanced statistical methods. Experience in longitudinal analysis of health outcomes using healthcare claims data is highly desirable. Other highly desirable experience includes experience with propensity score matching, analysis of electronic medical record data, and/or experience with machine learning methods. Qualified candidates will have advanced problem-solving skills, experience working both independently and collaboratively, a strong interest in using complex data to address important health services and policy research questions, an organized and detail-oriented approach to balance and prioritize multiple simultaneous projects, and motivation to advance the level technical skills needed to increase expertise with longitudinal, multi-level, machine learning, and geospatial methods in the secondary data analysis of large health care data.

Among the key duties of this position are the following;
  • Employs appropriate statistical methods for research.
  • Performs data transformations and linkages, creates and manages analytic datasets and variables, develops and tests programming code.
  • Assists in the preparation of data analysis plans and evaluates their feasibility for grant proposals; runs preliminary or pilot analyses to support senior staff/faculty in grant planning and development, including statistical power analyses.
  • Researches strategies for methods and measures from relevant literature and incorporates in applications.
  • Provides accurate and timely results of data analyses to meet project timelines and deadlines for deliverables.
  • Prepares methodological and results sections of publications and reports.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, statistics, social science, policy analysis, public health, or related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in data analysis, programming, and research, or equivalent combination of experience and graduate education.
  • Experience writing statistical programs to process and analyze large, complex datasets.

  • High degree of computer literacy.
  • Expertise with SAS for one or more years.

Preferred Qualifications
  • SAS certification.
