This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule from Bismarck, North Dakota with in-person work duties and meetings required.

Summary of Work

At the North Dakota Department of Transportation, we owe our success to our Team and processes. As the Research Section Leader in the Materials and Research Division, you will provide leadership and administer the Research, Development, and Technology Transfer program which consists of; internal research, external research, and Federal Highway Administration (FWHA) authorized Pooled Fund Studies. You will motivate and inspire your team by creating an environment that promotes positive communication, encourages team member bonding, and demonstrates flexibility.

The ideal person for this position will be a problem solver with excellent communication skills and attention to detail with previous experience in professional level engineering. You will be responsible for promoting research activities and coordinating efforts between NDDOT and universities or other states on research study proposals or Pooled Fund Study solicitations. Primary duties associated with this position are as follows:

  • Section Leader, supervising Research section staff by exhibiting strong leadership skills to mentor and provide for professional development and training. Provide work direction, task assignment, and review of staff work.
  • Administer the activities of the NDDOT Research, Development, and Technology Program (RD&T)-Research Coordinator.
  • Participate and engage with national transportation research efforts.
  • Develop and Maintain a Qualified Products List (QPL) for the Department.
  • Evaluate internal research projects, edit, and write reports and specification recommendations.
  • Represent the Materials and Research Division; lead or participate in special projects, meetings, conferences, or workshops.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Registration as professional engineer in North Dakota
  • Bachelor of Science degree in civil or construction engineering.
  • Four years of professional-level engineering work experience.
  • Requires a class D driver’s license for travel to meetings and project locations.
