General Work Hours: Hours may vary; minimum of 2 shifts per 6-week schedule . | No supervisory responsibilities. | No Travel requirements. | Pay commensurate with experience.


JOB SUMMARY:
Our Nursing team member’s primary goal is to provide the most remarkable patient experience while providing professional nursing services and patient care in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. The Registered Nurse follows the nursing process, including patient assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation of care given. The RN collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary team to provide physical and psychological support to patients and families while adhering to hospital and departmental polices and nursing standards and practice. The Emergency Department RN provides care for patients with various types of illness or trauma requiring emergency attention and must be able to recognize and effectively treat life-saving conditions.


Minimum Job Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Recent emergency or critical care experience preferred.


License/Certifications:

  • Must be licensed a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of NC.
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • ACLS Certification obtained during orientation period
  • PALS Certification obtained within 3 months
  • TNCC Certification preferred

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.

Other Skills:

  • Computer knowledge
  • Knowledge of anesthetic drugs, actions and side effects.

Personal Protective Equipment: Must be able and willing to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.


Additional Ashe Memorial Hospital Minimum Employment Requirements:

  • Annual Health & Safety Inservice (commonly referred to as “ADI”).
  • Back Safety/Body Mechanics.
  • Annual Employee Health Screening.

ESSSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Emergency Department RN provides direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of the RN include (but are not limited to):

  • Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological and spiritual support to patients, families and friends.
  • Provide direct, professional nursing care to patients.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection control policies.
  • Ensures safe operation of equipment.
  • Prepares equipment and assists physicians during examinations and treatments specific to ER.
  • Administers medications by using the electronic health record and scanning process.
  • Documents, monitors and reports symptoms and changes in patient status.
  • Provides patient education of illness/disease and promotes health maintenance and disease prevention.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families and other team members.
  • Performs a head-to-toe assessment and reassessments on all age groups.
  • Interact professionally with patient/family and provides explanation and verbal reassurance.
  • Formulates and updates an individualized plan of care for each patient.
  • Assumes the role of patient advocate.
  • Complies with protocols, procedures, and policies.
  • Knowledge of cardiac monitoring, rhythm interruption and appropriate treatment.
  • Prioritizes nursing care and uses critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of proper dosing and administration of critical medications.
  • Documents all nursing care data concisely, accurately and completely in a timely manner, using the appropriate format.
  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with all hospital staff, visitors, families and physicians.
  • Ability to be flexible organized and function under stressful and emergency situations.
  • Exhibits professionalism at all times, showing respect and dignity to all.
  • Participates with orientation and training of new personnel and acts as a resource and mentor in a professional manner.
  • Participates in special assignments and Quality Improvement projects.
  • Comprehends the triage process and is able to quickly and accurately prioritize acuity of the patient based on physical, psychological and social needs.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Completes required orientation as directed by facility.
  • Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment.
  • Follows facility and GHR Unusual Occurrence Protocol.
  • Respects cultural and religious practices of patients.
  • Upholds HIPAA regulations.
  • Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to lift a minimum of forty (40) pounds, greater than 40 pounds requires assistance.
  • Visual and hearing ability for patient care activities.
  • General indoor conditions, exposure to below 72 degree temperatures.
  • Repetitive motion: typing.
  • Noise: light noise to moderate noise.
  • Fine motor skills.
  • Visual acuity.
  • Must be able to respond to the facility within 30 minutes for call purposes.
  • Because patients need round-the-clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Nurses spend considerable time walking, bending, stretching and standing.
  • Assist in patient transfers, so they must follow proper body mechanics to guard against injury.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills necessary for job requirements.

Occupational Hazards:

  • Potential for exposure to infections patients or materials is negligible.
  • Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including blood, urine, bodily fluids, and cleaning solutions).
  • Potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items.
  • Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used.

Must be willing to receive all required vaccinations (i.e., flu shot, etc.). All new employees working must be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment (unless the new hire has requested and received an exemption).
