Teamwork makes the stream work.

Roku is changing how the world watches TV

Roku is the #1 TV streaming platform in the US, and we’ve set our sights on powering every television in the world. Roku pioneered streaming to the TV. Our mission is to be the TV streaming platform that connects the entire TV ecosystem. We connect consumers to the content they love, enable content publishers to build and monetize large audiences, and provide advertisers unique capabilities to engage consumers.

From your first day at Roku, you’ll make a valuable — and valued — contribution. We’re a fast-growing public company where no one is a bystander. We offer you the opportunity to delight millions of TV streamers around the world while gaining meaningful experience across a variety of disciplines.

About the team

Roku has become famous for making sure each feature and product is as perfect as it can be - just look at our remote control or user interface - while still pushing the boundaries of what it means to watch TV. In order to help ship features and products, you will partner with product management and engineering leaders to innovate and deliver features and capabilities across the Roku platform, while maintaining the integrity and cohesiveness of our user experience. Great candidates are comfortable with ambiguity, though that isn't code for "sloppy." Even when you aren't sure, you should move forward precisely and quickly knowing that action creates its own certainty. And because everyone here is empowered, your performance at Roku tends to come from getting others to embrace your idea. It's the most collaborative people who can drop their ego in service of their customers and create the win-win of success for our customers.

We believe that great user experiences come from people who have the vision to see the big picture on the macro side while still maintaining an incredible attention to detail on the micro side. More than ability to keep the vision while managing the minutiae: We need someone who can play three-dimensional chess on the axes of what our customers need, what our world-class engineers can produce, with the third axis being keeping things as elegantly easy as possible (and no more).

About the role

We’re looking for an Interaction Designer to work on the next generation of Ads Manager, our new advertising platform. This product designer will help us craft easy-to-use, empowering, and insightful web experiences for the Ads Manager user. This platform is the self-service portal that will power the future of TV Streaming advertising across buyers and sellers of media.

Note: Roku only offers two titles: “UX Product Designer” and “Senior UX Product Designer”. To be considered for the Senior title, a candidate should have at least six years of industry experience.

What you'll be doing

  • Work closely with your PM partners, User Researchers, Design Directors, and Executives to help shape the product strategy for Ads Manager Ad platform
  • Closely collaborate with experts in Engineering, Research, Product Management, and Analytics as we innovate on this platform
  • Directly communicate with executives about strategic initiatives for your suite of products
  • Gain a more holistic design sensibility – and fill any skill gaps – by working with colleagues who bring expertise from a wide variety of product areas
  • Take charge of product initiatives under the mentorship of some of our most experienced Managers and Directors
  • Thoughtfully create multiple design alternatives (“mild to wild”) and evaluate them against the business and user outcomes we are trying to achieve
  • Create mockups and prototypes for both evaluation and user testing
  • Partner with our stellar User Researchers and help mold the research plans to give us the most salient information for the next round of design decisions
  • Give well thought-out presentations in formal design reviews, walking your audience through your design process and how you made the decisions you made
  • Participate in the deeply synergistic team of UXers at Roku – you’ll share knowledge, exchange ideas, and have one of the best sounding boards in the tech industry

We're excited if you have

  • Experience designing for advertising or “big data”
  • Experience as an Interaction Designer on multiple shipped products, and the ability to discuss your specific contributions in a compelling way
  • Ability to thrive in an ambiguous environment, and to embrace opportunities to rapidly iterate on designs
  • A passion for innovation and problem solving
  • Hands-on experience working with User Researchers (or conducting User Research yourself) and utilizing the results of that research to shape your designs
  • 6+ years’ experience in UX and the ability to work independently with a product team (for a “Senior” title)
  • Endless empathy for the user

About our hiring process

We know your time is valuable, so we love being transparent about our hiring processes.

For this Interaction Designer role, we typically start with call from your dedicated Roku recruiter. Then you’ll have a follow-up call with the Hiring Manager (UX Design Manager). After that, we’ll ask you to do a 35-minute portfolio presentation to a panel of 2 of our senior UX Designers. In this presentation, we’ll want you to walk us through a couple of projects you’ve done that you’re especially proud of. You’ll tell us what your role was, what your process was, what went well and what didn’t, how it turned out, and what you learned from it. Then you’ll have one-on-one meetings with 2 more key stakeholders (a Researcher and a Product Manager), and that’s it! Throughout the process, your Roku recruiter will be there for you every step of the way.

We’d love to tell you more details about this role, the responsibilities you’ll have, and the products you’ll be working on – let’s talk!

The Roku Culture

Roku is a great place for people who want to work in a fast-paced environment where everyone is focused on the company's success rather than their own. We try to surround ourselves with people who are great at their jobs, who are easy to work with, and who keep their egos in check. We appreciate a sense of humor. We believe a fewer number of very talented folks can do more for less cost than a larger number of less talented teams. We’re independent thinkers with big ideas who act boldly, move fast and accomplish extraordinary things through collaboration and trust. In short, at Roku you'll be part of a company that's changing how the world watches TV.

We have a unique culture that we are proud of. We think of ourselves primarily as problem-solvers, which itself is a two-part idea. We come up with the solution, but the solution isn't real until it is built and delivered to the customer. That penchant for action gives us a pragmatic approach to innovation, one that has served us well since 2002.
