This position will serve as a Systems Administrator V – Server Administrator reporting to the Server Operations Manager within the IT Operational Support Division of DFPS Information Technology Services. The position assists with processing requests for server, storage, printing solutions, and investigates, develops, and implements solutions for agency requirements. This position is responsible for physical and/or virtual server deployment and troubleshooting. This includes all aspects of BIOS and firmware configurations, hard drive / drive array allocations, Operating System installs (configuration, patching, and hardening), role/feature installation/configurations, shares and/or print queue configurations as well as configuring backups and automated maintenance tasks. Responsibilities include racking and stacking of physical servers along with coordination with other Server and Network team members for full integration into the infrastructure. These tasks can also require a significant amount of research to develop specification to meet technical requirements for solutioning. The Server Administrator will assist with the forensic migration of data from to and between servers and file shares including the administration of the agency’s Microsoft OneDrive service. Requirements for this position include coordination with DIR vendors and procurement to obtain from bare metal servers through to fully managed DIR provisioned solutions. This position will use advanced technical skills to supply scripted automated solutions for simple and complex functionality in the way of deliverables related to the daily operations/maintenance, design, and implementation of applications with a wide range of client and agency specific functionality.

This position will work under minimal direction with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. This position often works outside normal business hours, nights, and weekends for server security patching and various project-based work. Although this position can work remotely to complete daily administration and configuration tasks, weekly onsite maintenance tasks, onsite emergency troubleshooting, and onsite problem resolution will be required.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Deploys and configures all on-prem physical and virtual servers

  • Maintains all related installation and configuration parameters, develops and maintains procedures, processes, and documentation as related to, and as needed.

  • Creates support documentation for field support organization as well as develop new SOP documentation for new Server Team IT solutions and processes

  • Recommends research of hardware and software that may prove beneficial to the agency’s mission

  • Keeps informed of the latest advancements in IT to ensure the smooth transition of the agency’s information technology and business requirements

  • Print Queue installation and/or configuration and troubleshooting

  • Printing/Scanning Multifunctional Device configuration and troubleshooting

  • Advanced analysis of server logs in addition to logs created through self-developed automated maintenance procedures

  • Back-up solution administration, configuration, and client troubleshooting

  • Faxing solution installation, configuration, troubleshooting and maintenance. Fax Gateway installation, configuration, and troubleshooting

  • File migrations – Advanced and Forensically sound migration of data between file shares or servers. Also, migration of data between servers and Microsoft Azure OneDrive

  • Configures and maintains the agency’s Microsoft Key Management Service for volume activation and license requirements for all agency desktops, laptops, and servers that run a Microsoft OS

  • Site Moves – Coordinates Server Team tasks and duties for agency site moves [New office location opening, site movement to a different physical address, or office location closure] which includes; Microsoft Active Directory site OU creation or removal, Facility Table update add or removal, login script table changes, DDL creation, Print Server deployment or reconfiguration, Printing MDF reconfigurations, file share creation, modifications, or data migration

  • Server security patching through use of agency WSUS

  • Implementation, configuration, management, and troubleshooting of Microsoft OneDrive for business

  • Provides Tier-3 support to other IT groups and desktop services support organization for all server, backup, faxing, and printing related issues

  • Adheres to all Texas Department of Family and Protective Services HR policies and performs related work as assigned to maintain operations



  • Knowledge Skills Abilities:
  • Microsoft Server System Administration

  • Skill in developing technical documentation

  • Skill in providing customer service

  • Ability to simultaneously coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks

  • Ability to communicate technical information to individuals with various levels of technical knowledge

  • Skills in using Windows PowerShell and command line scripting to perform complex tasks is a plus

  • Knowledge of enterprise faxing solutions is a plus


  • Registration or Licensure Requirements:


    Initial Selection Criteria:
    Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in computer science, computer information systems, or management information systems is generally preferred. Education and experience may be substituted for one another
    1 year experience in server or client hardware and software support
    1 year experience in data collection and analysis
