The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the city towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The Correction Intelligence Bureau (CIB) is essential to the DOC’s efforts to increase the safety and security of incarcerated individuals, staff, and contractors, as well as those who visit our facilities. The CIB is responsible for investigating all new criminal conduct, as defined by New York Penal Code, committed by incarcerated individuals or visitors to our facilities which involve; assaults on staff, serious injuries resulting from inmate-on-inmate assaults, escapes, arson, forceable touching, destruction of city property, criminal acts, as well as a discovery of contraband. The Correction Intelligence Bureau investigators work closely with prosecutors in all five boroughs, to present criminal investigations for prosecution. The CIB is part of the Intelligence, Investigation, and Trials Division. The unit consists of both uniform and non-uniform staff.

As a Supervising Investigator, the candidate will be responsible for supervising a team of investigators engaged in the interview DOC uniform, non-uniform, contractors, as well as incarcerated persons and other witnesses; obtain documentary evidence such as medical records and DOC reports, surveillance video, and inmate telephone call records and recordings. Candidate will analyze, review, screen and prioritize cases while maintaining a large caseload; work closely with prosecutors from all five boroughs, as well as other outside law enforcement and correctional agencies; and provide testimony for court and other legal proceedings. The selected candidate will also comprehend the DOC procedures, rules and regulations, the criminal justice system, the court system, and New York Penal Law.

1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full-time experience in one or more of the fields of accounting, auditing, correction administration, criminal justice administration and planning, forensic science, inspection, investigation, law enforcement, personnel administration, police science, and security, or in a major operational area of the agency in which the appointment is to be made; or

2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or

3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above.

Investigators must have a strong investigative background, excellent communications skills, strong analytical and writing skills, the ability to be objective and thorough in conducting criminal investigations, and a valid driver’s license. Foreign language skills are desirable. Ability to obtain New York Peace Officer status. The preferred candidate has a BA/BS. Successful candidates must clear a background investigation.
