Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.
The Performing Arts Technical Supervisor at the National Hispanic Cultural Center will oversee operations, maintenance and safeguarding of production venues and equipment, including coordinating the scheduling and resources for all events and programs held within the Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts. This position will also supervise the Resident Lighting Designer, Chief Audio Engineer, all temporary and contract lighting designers and audio engineers, and all theatre production personnel, as well as perform lighting and audio tech and all areas of technical production duties as needed.
How does it get done?
Supervise all general theatre production personnel, including the Resident Lighting Designer, Chief Audio Engineer, and all temporary and contract lighting designers and audio engineers. Ensure proper use, function, safety and maintenance of all theatre lighting and audio equipment, including working with lighting, electricity, wiring and sound equipment related to theatre venues and productions, designing audio and lighting for productions, and reviewing and implementing the lighting and audio budgets and lighting and audio related policies and procedures. Supervise contract lighting and audio personnel's use of theatre equipment, including hiring, organizing and supervising their work.
Oversee staff performing front of house, backstage, stage management, hospitality, load-in, strike, technical rehearsals and wardrobe management. Oversee operations, maintenance and safeguarding of production venues and equipment. Ensure proper use, function, safety and maintenance of all theatre equipment and of the entire Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts. Ensure proper operation and maintenance of the orchestra pit and shell in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre; maintain all other equipment and supplies needed for orchestral and other performances. Recruit, train, coordinate and assign volunteer and paid, non-employee theatre technical staff for individual shows and productions. Orient facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations.
Advise guest production managers, designers, artists, lighting and sound designers on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show and supervise the implementation of approved technical designs. Coordinate use of facilities and equipment, including maintaining calendar of NHCC productions and programs in theatre venues and Plaza Mayor, communicating frequently with Rentals Manager for theatre venues and Plaza Mayor, Rentals Manager for remaining NHCC areas, and Performing Arts Education Coordinator. Advise Performing Arts Director on creation and revisions to performing arts season with a particular look at technical capabilities needed and resources available. Assist Performing Arts Director in the creation of Performing Arts budgets (for State and Foundation funds) and ensuring its proper implementation. Maintain inventories of Performing Arts equipment and supplies, obtain bids for and oversee their replacement, maintenance or upgrades.

Minimum Qualification
Associate's degree in Design, Architecture, Applied Arts, Fine Arts, or Graphic Design or related field and two (2) years of experience in exhibition design and/or fabrication. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
This role is multidimensional. While it is necessary in this role to spend many hours on a computer, the technical supervisor is also required to lift at least 25 lbs and to regularly walk around a large facility. The nature of this role includes manual labor.
