Duties:

1-60Deck Operations: As directed by the Chief Mate and Boatswain, this unlicensed Deck Department position is responsible for: maintenance of deck department spaces, decks, tools, equipment, machinery, small crafts, and associated gear; operation of all non-engineering area deck machinery, crafts adheres to safety guidelines, policies, and procedures; operating deck equipment including winches, A-frames, cranes, davits, and windlass; adhering to safe and proper operation of anchor windlass, capstans, cranes, winches and other deck machinery; loading and stowing stores, scientific equipment; handling lines, operating capstans, when mooring or unmooring from berth; operating windlass when anchoring; rigging of gangway and setting associated safety; properly lashing deck cargo and securing hatches. Able to work non-standard flexible watch hours; stand watch as look-out, helm as part of a bridge navigation watch; operate small boats.Essential
2-30Cleaning and Maintenance: Performs routine preventative general maintenance of all Deck Department assigned interior and exterior areas including ship's hull, deck, bulkheads, and superstructure; maintain sanitary cleanliness of ship; operating and maintaining deck machinery such as the cranes, davits, handling systems, A-frame, windlass and winches; care and protection of deck equipment and rigging.Essential
3-10Safety: Adheres to safe working practices ensuring safety of all hands involved in deck related operations through training, use proper safety equipment, and following safety procedures and guidelines. Understands pertinent safety, environmental, regulatory rules and regulations. Keeps Chief Mate and Boatswain well informed on a daily basis. Member of firefighting and emergency response teams. Able to assume the duties of the cox'n or man in charge of the liferaft or rescue boat. Perform other related duties as required.Essential
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Advanced and pertinent knowledge and experience with safely over-boarding and recovering equipment at sea.
  • Advanced deck equipment experience: crane, winch, davit and small boat launch, recovery and operation.
  • Knowledge of life raft equipment and ability to assume the duties of the cox'n or person in charge of the liferaft or rescue boat.
  • Experience in preventive maintenance of deck equipment, ship maintenance and upkeep, proper methods of prep/paint work, inventory of painting and preservation equipment.
  • Experience with line handling and warping during berthing and departing movement of vessels; rigging and handling of deck equipment and supplies.
  • Experience with small boat handling
  • Proficiency as a rigger and with loads and rigging/unrigging ladders, brows, and gangways
  • Computer skills capable of creating documents and inventory spreadsheets.
  • Ability to stand navigation bridge watches at helm and lookout, and inport security watches.
  • Adaptability to apply knowledge and skill to perform other mission-related duties as assigned, including duties related to the safety of the vessel and personnel.
  • Understanding of the importance of a leadership role in developing positive working relationships with all vessel and visiting personnel.

Typical Experience:

The successful applicant will have prior experience with:

  • small boat deployment/recovery/operations/handling
  • ship and deck equipment preventative maintenance
  • line handling & warping during berthing evolutions
  • anchoring, crane and winch operation
  • rigging, loading and unloading cargo
  • deployment/recovery of moorings and equipment over the side

Preferred: Prior experience as bosun, experience with deck equipment and safe deck operations. Small Boat coxswain experience. Experience with and appreciation of the research vessel mission.



Required Education or Training:
  • Qualified applicants must possess the following valid credentials:
    • U.S. Passport
    • TWIC card
    • USCG Medical Certificate
    • U. S. Coast Guard (USCG), Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) with the following endorsements: Able Seaman-Unlimited, RFPNW, Lifeboatman, Able Seafarer -Deck, PSC, and Basic Training
    • First Aid and CPR certifications

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 75, based on education and experience.

Applicants will be required to provide documentation of participation in random drug testing program for at least 60 of the preceding 185 days, did not have any positive test results, and did not refuse to take a required test. If not under employment, where a random drug testing program exists, the applicant shall provide a completed test indicating they are free of illegal substance abuse, when requested by Seward Marine Center, prior to employment. Testing will be for the presence of cocaine, opiates, marijuana (THC), amphetamines and PCP (phencyclidine). Testing will be in accordance with the Department of Transportation Program and testing shall be in accordance with United States Coast Guard Drug and Alcohol Testing guidelines outlined in the Federal Register 46 C.F.R. 4, 5, and 16.

UAF COVID Requirements:

Effective immediately, all new UAF hires, whose job function or work location results in the employee being subject to the UAF vaccine requirements guided by the Federal Contractor Employee vaccine mandate*, must be fully vaccinated with an FDA- or WHO- authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine or have obtained a university-approved disability/medical or religious exemption no later than six weeks from the new hire's start date.
