Purdue University is seeking candidates fluent in the social model of disability to join our growing team of professionals. As an Access Consultant, you will meet with students seeking accommodations based on disability status and conduct the interactive process. Utilize their knowledge of disability law (Section 504, 508, and ADAA) and resultant case law to determine reasonable accommodation assuring the university complies with those laws. Assures students receive reasonable accommodations and faculty implement those accommodations in an effective and compliant manner, thus buffering the university from potential legal exposure. Develop and present educational offerings to further advance the university community’s understanding of disability as another form of diversity with the same protections as other civil rights laws.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Meet with students, faculty, and staff to identify barriers to full participation in the classroom, housing, dining, and extra-curricular offerings.
  • Determines reasonable accommodations for each setting. Requests, reviews, and interprets additional sources of information/documentation as needed to perform this function
  • Collaboratively communicates with faculty/instructors and other University personnel to coordinate the effective delivery of reasonable accommodations while striving to minimize student burden in achieving access.
  • Problem solves individual solutions. Maintains timely and appropriate records by documenting communication with students/faculty interactions as well as the rationale for accommodations in the DRC database and written record files, which are legally discoverable
  • Consistently demonstrates independent judgment and decision-making that is consistent with disability law as shaped by case law and is within the goals and philosophy of the department as well as the larger University community. Maintains appropriate confidentiality in all forms of communication, complying with FERPA, campus, and departmental guidelines including record retention.
  • Maintains current knowledge of “Best Practices in Higher Education” related to disability accommodation service delivery as framed by the Social Model of Disability
  • Stays current with changes in State or Federal Disability Law and new Case Law and its application to their work.
  • Consults with their supervisor on changing legal guidance to ensure a consistent application in the department’s work assuring the University is in compliance with these changes
  • Contributes to the department’s educational programming. Actively and positively participates in the continuous improvement process related to the design, delivery, evaluation, and revision of departmental services, procedures, processes, and activities in an effort to support an office known for “Best Practice” services.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor in a field related to Student Personnel Work, (Disability Studies, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Guidance Counseling, Higher Education Student Affairs, or a closely related field)
  • 1-2 years of Disability-related experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge, training, or experience in State and Federal laws related to Disability Rights: ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508, ADAAA, and their application to higher education
  • Education, training, and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: concepts of Universal Design for Instruction and the social model of disability
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Developed interpersonal communication skills including written and public presentation skills.
  • High-level comfort with desktop computer applications
  • Successfully complete and maintain University certifications related to FERPA

Preferred:

  • Master in a field related to Student Personnel Work, (Disability Studies, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Guidance Counseling, Higher Education Student Affairs, or a closely related field)
  • Experience working with students with disabilities in a higher education setting
  • Experience conducting the interactive process to determine access issues and appropriate adjustments in a higher education setting

This position could be filled at multiple levels (Access Consultant-P2 or Senior Access Consultant-P3). The hiring manager will determine the job level based on the skills, experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate.

Senior Access Consultant (P3) Required:

  • MA/MS in a field related to Student Personnel Work, (Disability Studies, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Guidance Counseling, Higher Education Student Affairs, or a closely related field.)
  • 3-5 years of Disability-related experience
  • 2 years of direct experience providing services to individuals with disabilities in higher education

Senior Access Consultant Position Summary:
Maintains a reduced caseload of students seeking accommodations based on disability status and conducts the interactive process leading to the determination of reasonable accommodations. As a seasoned professional, works under limited supervision applying knowledge and experience of disability law (Section 504, 508, and ADAA). Serves as primary trainer and mentor to new and existing Access Consultants playing a significant role in their professional development. Serves as a technical lead for complex case management questions. Conducts regular file reviews of an assigned group of Access Consultants as a quality control check and to provide feedback and suggest improvements and alternative approaches as appropriate with a goal of developing in others a deeper understanding of the nuance of the work. Works with DRC leadership to develop and administer a formal orientation/training experience for new Access Consultants. Represents the DRC on committees and work groups that are strategic to the mission of the DRC.
