Job Summary:
The Activities therapist participates in and supports the patient’s program and milieu as a therapist in various therapies to effect improvement in their mental and social well-being.
Responsibilities:
- Participates in and supports the patient program and milieu as a leader or co-leader in therapeutic activities and adjunctive therapies as scheduled.
- Instructs the patient in the patient program and encourage and guide their participation.
- Engages the patients directly for therapeutic interactions.
- Observes the patient for their readiness and capability to participate in individual and group therapies using formal and informal tools.
- Use positive language, adjust your vocabulary to the patients’ cognitive level, and speak calmly and firmly.
- Communicate Therapeutic Recreation assessment results with the client, the client’s family members, professional team members, and other key support networks.
- Document in a manner that meets specific professional, agency, and or government requirements.
- Collaborate with the client and relevant support networks during Therapeutic Recreation program development.
- Completes all the required patient chart documentation, as specified by the policies and by the manager.
- Notifies the staff of any special conditions regarding the patients’ stability, as observed in groups.
- Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patients, families, and client’s facility staff.
- Adheres to department/hospital policies.
- All other duties as required.
SKILLS:
- Ability to understand psychological, psychiatric, and medical terminology and principles.
- Ability to work in a team environment. High degree of skill in relating to people and an interest in their welfare.
- Ability to direct and perform a variety of therapeutic activities and to respond to varied needs of patients.
- Good verbal and writing skills.
- A valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License.
- May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
- BS in Therapeutic Recreation, Creative Arts Therapy, Teaching or Occupation Therapy.
- Occupational Therapy registration or certification in Creative Arts Therapy.
- Previous teaching or activities therapist experience preferred.
