About the Department
The 900+ positions of the Facilities Services service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Services provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.

The Grounds and Building Services unit provides campus wide programs and services and support for the University’s 2000+ acres of campus landscape. These programs and services include landscape construction and maintenance, comprehensive waste and recycling programs and services and management of the University’s auto shop and motor fleet. Revenue supported programs and services are provided to Transportation, Housing, Dining, Athletics, Campus Recreation and individual colleges and departments.

Essential Job Duties
  • Servicing, repairing and installing all door hardware, including fire rated exit devices, closers, mortise, and cylindrical locking hardware;
  • Makes keys via key punches, duplicating, and/or code-generating machines
  • Understanding of NFPA 101 and NFPA 80 life safety and fire codes, and the ability to locate and research needed materials associated with job
  • Position must have the ability to troubleshoot and repair problems with all mechanical and electromechanical hardware and devices
  • Basic low voltage knowledge
  • Understanding and ability to work with hardware specification take-offs. Ability to read and understand blueprints and floor plans
  • Experience with developing cost estimates and proposals.
  • Working knowledge in key bittings array for small format master keying, pinning of cores
  • Communicate with customer scope of work needed.
  • Monitor and track all orders for timely completion.
  • Handle project management tasks and have a working knowledge of processes and time lines.
  • Ability to review construction plans and hardware specifications according to University specifications and construction guidelines.
  • Allocate appropriate resources and time for completion of own work and other’s work, without scheduling conflicts.
  • Serve as a technical expert; guide, direct, and coach others regarding application.

Other Responsibilities
Advanced Locksmith will have the knowledge and skill to make necessary comments and reviews on new construction submittals, complete all tasks that relate to keying a building, paperwork associated with rekeys, key meetings, pinning cores, cutting keys, installation and repair of hardware. As an advanced locksmith, position must be capable of troubleshooting and if necessary disabling low voltage electro-mechanical hardware circuit when necessary.
Will check and re check work of others considering accuracy with respect to standards and code compliances. Advance Locksmith position will maintain on call status, and will be responsible for continuing education and license renewal requirements. Will oversee any special assignments as assigned by supervisor.
This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.



Other Required Qualifications
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
  • Locksmith experience
  • Knowledge and skill to make necessary comments and reviews on new construction submittals; complete all tasks that relate to keying a building; paperwork associated with re-keys; key meetings pinning cores, cutting keys; installation of hardware.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefer 5+ years locksmith experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, i.e., Word, Excel.
  • Experience in AiM work order system is preferable, but not contingent for position.
  • Prefer Institutional Locksmith Association and/or Associated Institutional locksmith Association membership.
  • Certified Journey Level Certification and/or Fire Door Inspector Certification, but not contingent for position.

Required License or Certification
  • Current locksmith license.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire. Must be maintained.
