Responsibilities:

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Nuclear Sciences Division is seeking a Senior Technical Advisor for Advanced Reactors responsible for understanding challenges at the intersections of nuclear systems, materials, chemistry and performance. The successful candidate will work with leading researchers and sponsors in next generation system design, radiation chemistry, high-temperature materials development, and modeling. As a leader in the field, the individual will have the opportunity to conceive, create, develop, and implement actionable strategies that will enable PNNL to deliver cutting edge solutions to DOE missions in partnership with the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, U.S. industry, and other national laboratories.

  • Inform and support business activities and interact with senior sponsor executives and PNNL senior leadership to identify and shape future R&D opportunities, both within PNNL and across partner national laboratories and industry.
  • Develop and grow relationships with sponsors, other DOE labs, research institutions, and industry to collaborate and lead large-scale projects of national importance and obtain sufficient funding to support self and project teams.
  • Collaborate with Energy and Environment Directorate leadership and sponsors to identify and secure investments in next generation laboratory capabilities needed to meet DOE and commercial mission objectives.
  • Leverage personal expertise and relationships as an internationally recognized expert in advanced nuclear reactors to establish new approaches to advance the state of the art. This includes strategies to extend PNNL’s capabilities in areas critical to our sponsors such as molten salt chemistry, off-gas, radiation effects on properties of alloys, and materials development.
  • Deliver invited presentations at national and international forums and develop a significant record of technical products influencing the discipline of materials science including literature publications or reports, intellectual property leading to publications, copyrights and/or patents.
  • Identify, attract, mentor and guide students as well as junior to senior level staff across PNNL to develop their technical and leadership competencies.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% time.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 9 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA or higher and 7 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science or a related discipline.
  • Established international leader in the nuclear fuel cycle, radiation effects, and materials degradation.
  • Demonstrated track record of leading interdisciplinary teams, proven ability to develop and grow business, provide strategic direction, and manage large complex projects, and familiarity with current state-of-the-art characterization and modeling methods.
  • Experience developing and successfully implementing project plans for complex projects, including scoping, scheduling, staffing and budgeting.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills and a demonstrated ability to develop and lead multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • A proven track record of generating new ideas and concepts and operating with a high level of initiative and independence.
  • Prior experience in delivering effective presentations to a technical audience.

Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.
Testing Designated Position (TDP):
This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
