Job description
Under supervision, assembles basic anesthesia set ups & equipment, prepares anesthesia procedure trays, orders anesthesia supplies & equipment, sets up invasive monitoring equipment, cleans & coordinates preventive maintenance and/or repair of equipment, stocks supplies for the Anesthesiology Department, & performs related services.

Essential Functions:

  • Assembles basic anesthesia set up & equipment

  • Performs initial anesthesia machine check & subsequent leak testing between cases

  • Troubleshoots anesthesia machine & physiological monitors as needed

  • Assists w/ patient transport to the operating room, including placement of the patient on the OR table & non-invasive monitors (NIBP, EKG, Sp02, & temperature)

  • Assists w/ set up of invasive monitoring equipment in routine & emergency situations: Swan-Ganz, arterial line, central venous pressure line, PA Line, cardiac output, fiber optic intubation & regional nerve block

  • May assist w/ direct patient care under the direction of the anesthesia provider

  • Assist anesthesia provider w/ induction of anesthesia, including cricoid pressure for intubation as directed

  • Picks up & delivers lab specimens & ABG's as required

  • Coordinates patient monitoring & equipment availability w/ PACU & Critical Care units

  • Works w/ perioperative team to facilitate prompt OR turnover time

  • Removes & disposes of all supplies & equipment at the end of the case

  • Replaces supplies & equipment needed for general/regional anesthesia between cases

  • Prepares anesthesia procedure tray as requested

  • Disinfects, decontaminates & sterilizes all anesthesia-related items, machines & carts as required per Infection Control procedures

  • Maintains adequate stock of medications & supplies in anesthesia machines & carts, including rotation & replacement of dated items

  • Maintains adequate stock of supplies in emergency code blue boxes, malignant hyperthermia carts, difficult intubation carts, invasive monitoring carts, pediatric carts & regional anesthesia carts as listed on cart inventory

  • Examines sterilization date on medical instruments, supplies & equipment & replaces items no longer sterile

  • Maintains records & documentation of equipment, quality checks & waived testing performed in department

  • Coordinates w/ Biomedical Engineering for maintenance & repair of anesthesia monitoring equipment as needed

  • Disassembles, inspects, tests, wraps & dates instruments & equipment

  • Identifies damage & initiates appropriate repair & replacement process

  • Uses steam, gas & plasma sterilizer

  • Reads & records Biological test results

  • Assists w/ complex patient transport to PACU/ICU including preparation of oxygen source & transportation monitors

  • Coordinates w/ Pharmacy to maintain stock, return & replace all outdated items except controlled drugs

  • Maintains log for Extra Order drugs

  • Ensures availability of backup monitoring equipment at all times & provides timely replacement as need

  • Coordinates w/ Unit Manager to maintain & revise inventory par levels for supplies & equipment

  • May participate in the orientation & training of new employees

  • Establishes & maintains courteous & cooperative relations w/ the public, patients & other personnel

  • May perform other duties as required

Basic Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma/GED

  • Valid BLS, if not currently certified incumbent must receive certification with in thirty (30) days of hire

  • Certification by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists & Technicians as a Certified Anesthesia Technician, preferred

  • Certificate of training for Drager Anesthesia System, PPS Saracap or equivalent biomedical course, basic nursing care, crisis management, & principles of asepsis, preferred

  • Current understanding of equipment operations used in Anesthesia department, working knowledge of Anesthesia department procedures

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience as an anesthesia technician or current enrollment in accredited Anesthesia Technology program required.
