Minimum Qualifications
Archivist I:
  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or related to the assigned program from an ALA accredited university, with specialization in archival enterprise and/or administration; or must be received within six (6) months of employment.
  • Master’s degree in History/Public History with coursework in archival administration, or a Master’s Degree in a related field, may substitute for the required Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.


Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • May require a valid operator’s license and the use of a personal vehicle.


Archivist II:
  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or related to the assigned program from an ALA accredited university, with specialization in archival enterprise and/or administration, plus two (2) years professional experience working in an archives, library, museum, or other cultural heritage institution
  • Master’s degree in History/Public History with coursework in archival administration, or a Master’s Degree in a related field, may substitute for the required Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • May require a valid operator’s license and the use of a personal vehicle.


Notes to Applicants
This position will be responsible for the appraisal, processing, and preservation of digital records, including official City of Austin records and community donations, and making those records accessible to the public. This position will be responsible for researching, recommending, and implementing strategies and actions necessary to ensure that the Austin History Center is adhering to professional best practices, The position will also assist with developing program policies, procedures, standards, and manuals in accordance with program objectives and goals. In addition, this position will provide reference services to customers and participate in outreach programming to support the Austin communities’ efforts in preserving digital records.

Pay Range
Archivist I: $23.62 – $27.42
Archivist II: $25.25 – $29.94

Hours
Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Note: Work hours may vary based on operational or business needs; evenings and weekends may be required on occasion.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using Preservica or similar digital asset management software; and its integration with ArchivesSpace or similar archival management software.
  • Familiarity with metadata standards such as DACS, EAD, Dublin Core, MODS, PREMIS and creating metadata records for archival objects.
  • Demonstrated experience processing born-digital collections and capturing disk images from legacy media such as hard drives and floppy disks. Knowledge of digital forensic tools for harvesting, managing, and preserving born-digital materials, such as BitCurator, BagIt, DataAccessioner, etc.
  • Ability to collaborate with AudioVisual archivist, Imaging Archivist, and Processing Archivist in establishing and adhering to digitization workflows and file naming conventions.
  • Experience with Python, Ruby or similar programming languages to create and/or use scripts to manage workflows that leverage automation.
  • Relevant coursework, training or certification in digital archives.
  • Experience answering archival/historically-related reference questions from the public.
