Job Description

We are currently seeking a Assistant Controller to be based in Stamford, CT and report to the Chief Accounting Officer. This position is a results-driven controller to oversee our financial operations, period close and external audit. To ensure success in this role, you will demonstrate in-depth knowledge of financial management principles and have extensive experience in a similar role. You are someone whose expertise translates into optimized financial operations and increased profitability.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Lead the day-to-day accounting functions to ensure accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions.
  • Manage and ensure an accurate and timely month, quarter, and year end close.
  • Oversee the consolidation of all financial data necessary for accurate business unit and consolidated results.
  • Subject matter expert for accounting of property, plant and equipment and inventories.
  • Ensure the appropriateness of revenue recognition including trade promotions under US GAAP, in partnership with organizational functions.
  • Guide financial decisions by developing and monitoring policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate and enhance financial controls procedures.
  • Analyze and interpret balance sheets, income statements, cash flow, and liabilities.
  • Drives to optimize and automate accounting processes for a faster monthly/quarterly close cycle.
  • Collaborate with shared services function (business service center) and review the reconciliations for accounts payable, accounts receivable, GR/IR, deductions, billings etc.
  • Drive continuous improvement mindset across the accounting team, leveraging project management and change management skills to deliver results.
  • Advise staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
  • Obtain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Key stakeholder who manages the overall relationship with internal and external auditors, ensuring information is provided accurately and timely and resolve conflicts and questions as they arise.
  • Support financial reporting manager with 10Qs and 10Ks, as necessary.
  • Provide guidance, coaching and support to direct reports, focusing on individual and team development.
  • Address performance concerns in a timely manner with an emphasis placed on performance improvement.

Qualifications

Key qualifications include:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience (Big 4 strongly desired and CPG industry experience preferred)
  • Broad knowledge of and experience within Finance/Accounting and Auditing, including international GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) and Sarbanes-Oxley
  • Proven experience developing and leading a high-performing accounting and control organization, including leading distributed accounting teams
  • Demonstrates strong business judgment applied to routine and complex financial and accounting issues.
  • Self-motivated team player who can credibly communicate with and relate to individuals at all levels in the finance and accounting organization and other associated internal customer teams
  • Functional experience with SAP 4 / HANA a plus
  • Ability to work effectively with multi-level colleagues including Executive leadership
  • Excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication
  • Natural collaborator
  • Superb organizational and time management abilities
  • Ability to both grow in the role and grow with the company, demonstrating leadership capabilities and upward progression
  • Continuous improvement mindset
  • Experience building and coordinating cross-functional teams
  • Experience with accounting and finance process transformation and system implementations a plus
