Unit Description:
The Counseling Center assists NC State students experiencing personal, academic, or vocational problems. The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with professional counseling services and outreach to help them cope with issues that may impede successful academic performance. The center also offers crisis intervention and psychological/psychiatric assessment as well as consultation with others who have concerns about the mental/emotional state of NC State students. Our services are primarily short-term in nature and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate.

Essential Job Duties
The Assistant Director is required to perform administrative duties, provide direct service to students, consult with university faculty/staff and participate in supervision and training. This position will work closely with the Associate Director for Clinical Services in developing, revising, and maintaining policies and procedures to ensure adherence to best clinical practices and legal and ethical codes. This position will be responsible for coordination of multidisciplinary teams/committees, will directly supervise a number of clinical staff, and will assist in managing the Center’s embedded clinicians.
The Assistant Director will carry a reduced clinical load that may include walk-in/crisis assessment, after-hours on-call, individual, couples, and group psychotherapy, clinical consultation, outreach programming, and clinical supervision. There is an expectation that the Assistant Director assist in hiring, training, supervising and consulting with all clinical staff, including trainees, as needed.
This staff member serves on the Administrative Team, along with the Executive Director, and other Assistant/Associate Directors. Members of the Administrative Team will be expected to submit reports and/or data to the Executive Director as requested and will serve on committees within and outside of the Center as required. Members of the Administrative Team are expected to support the Center’s mission and commitment to diversity.
Duties and Responsibilities including but not limited to:
  • Individual and group counseling of NC State students/clients (personal, academic, and vocational assessment and counseling); psychological assessment; developmental and crisis counseling; couples counseling; evaluation of students for withdrawal from the University
  • Development and participation in outreach and stepped care programs
  • Consultation with faculty, staff, parents, and others
  • Provide evaluations and recommendations regarding students with academic and conduct problems
  • Some participation in after-hours “on call” and possible evening office hours
  • General administrative responsibilities


Duties specific to the embedded program:
  • Develop and support collaborative relationships with the colleges
  • Oversee Let’s Talk initiatives for colleges
  • Lead postvention efforts involving embedded clinicians
  • Build strong partnerships within the colleges as well as embedded staff
  • Assure adherence to clinical standards within the embedded environments
  • Oversee electronic medical records, ethical guidelines and quality of care
  • Consult with University administrators, faculty and staff within and outside of the Counseling Center, regarding mental health, safety, and welfare issues

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
Masters degree and independent license as a psychologist, professional counselor or social
worker

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience utilizing a time-limited model of care.
  • A minimum of five years post-licensure experience and a minimum of three years of demonstrated administrative and leadership/supervisory experience, preferably in a large university counseling center.
  • Experience with program development and evaluation preferred.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)
Licensed as a psychologist, professional counselor or social worker at the independent level in the state of North Carolina within six months of employment.
