Summary of Position:
Ferris State University iseeks well qualified and experienced applicants for a full-time faculty and Department Chair position to serve within the School of Criminal Justice. Now in the school's 50th year, this is a program with a long history of successfully preparing graduates for careers in law enforcement, correctional, and the criminal justice system. The Department Chair will function as the leader and voice for the School of Criminal Justice. The Department Chair will manage the activities of the department, subject to the approval of the Dean. The chair is responsible to the Dean for the development of department plans, guidelines and internal office operation; directs the department's administrative organization and may delegate authority and assign responsibility in accordance with departmental policies and procedures; and represents the academic discipline both on and off campus either personally or by designation of department representatives. The Department Chair is responsible for recommending to the Dean such matters as personnel evaluation and discipline, curricular changes, course offerings, teaching assignments, the department budget and other related responsibilities.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Chairs receive release time but are required to teach one (1) course per semester.
Departmental Representative
Advocate on behalf of departmental interests/needs within the COB and the University
Represent departmental perspective in University Annual Planning process
Function as active initiator (timing, membership, etc.) and departmental representative in external functions (e.g., advisory boards, recruiting) related to department and its programs
Seek/secure resources necessary to support departmental efforts
Ensure departmental consistency with accreditation standards/expectations
Advocate and promote the programmatic options within the school towards student recruitment and retention, and work with faculty to further these initiatives
Instructor Evaluation and Development
Conduct hiring of permanent faculty consistent with departmental procedures (FFA 7.6.A/B)
Effect hiring of qualified part-time faculty as necessary to fulfill departmental commitments.
Coordinate evaluation of part-time faculty teaching effectiveness
Perform annual evaluation of non-tenured faculty for reappointment/non-reappointment (FFA 3.4.G)
Perform annual evaluation for tenure recommendations (FFA 3.5.F)
Conduct faculty post-tenure reviews (FFA 7.8.A)
Function as the first step in Faculty Grievance process (FFA 9.3.A/B)
Consult with faculty members developing sabbatical proposals (FFA 10.4.E)
Maintain dynamic staffing plan, matching anticipated departures/hires and programmatic needs to ensure appropriate and timely curricular coverage.
Foster faculty involvement in scholarly activity and professional development in support of effective teaching. Evaluate efficacy of faculty efforts.
Programmatic Development and Positioning
Involve Faculty in assessment of new/revised courses/curriculum (FFA 7.5.A.1/2)
Involve Faculty in development of course scheduling/assignments (FFA 7.5.A.3 / 7.7)
Ensure consistency of course offerings across sections/locations/delivery modes
Foster dynamic programmatic assessment to align needs/expectations of students/parents/workplace with programmatic offerings
Monitor effectiveness/appropriateness of departmental offerings across sites
Identify/maintain/communicate programmatic competitive advantages
Monitor and assess programmatic production measures (e.g., enrollment, graduates, etc.)
Foster development and assessment of measurable outcomes for programs (including process for action predicated on findings).
Foster/assist programs in conduct of academic program reviews
Student Support
Promote/oversee student internships as an integral element of program offerings
Provide oversight of the student advising process in department. Foster development and application of effective faculty advising skills, consistent with the expectations of the tenure and post-tenure review processes.
Function as administrative stage for expression of student issues/concerns/queries, etc.
Maintain sensitivity/perspective re: student/instructor issues through classroom involvement
The Department Chair is responsible for recommending to the Dean such matters as personnel evaluation and discipline, curricular changes, course offerings, teaching assignments, the department budget and other related responsibilities.
Faculty members also have professional responsibilities which may include advising students, orientation and registration of students, participation in University committees, keeping regular posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students), and participation in traditional functions which have academic significance (ex. reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time). Faculty members may be required to teach off-campus or in an on-line environment.
