The Johnson & Johnson Vision Care site in Limerick was established in 1996 and is one of the largest and most automated contact lens manufacturing operations in the world, with a workforce of 1600. The site plays a fundamental role in supporting the Johnson & Johnson mission to change the trajectory of health around the world.

In Limerick we manufacture strategic products in Johnson & Johnson Vision Care’s product portfolio including ACUVUE®, the world’s brand leader in contact lens. Our team serve customers and patients in markets outside the US with our current portfolio of products and are also working to deliver new breakthroughs in contact lens technology for the future.

We use the most sophisticated technology in the industry. Using our highly automated production process, we produce daily disposable contact lenses while using powerful injection moulding, robotics, vision systems, digitalization and sterilization technologies.

Our Vision Care site in Limerick is committed to environmentally sustainable operations, the site has earned ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certifications and driven consistent reductions in product resource intensity. The site uses 100% wind power. Part of the facility’s demand is met with an on-site turbine.

The Limerick site has a strong working partnership with its sister Vision Care site in Jacksonville, Florida and with the nine other Johnson & Johnson locations in Ireland.

Position Summary:

The Successful candidate will be responsible for working closely with the automation Principal and senior Principal Engineers on site to agree on and implement standard processes for automation solutions for the business as needed. You will be encouraged to develop solutions, lead discussions with vendors and act as lead point of contact for automation group for all critical projects sustain activities that you are involved with.

The scope will encompass the entire range of automated systems including PLC, SCADA, Vision Systems, Robotics, Networks, Lasers, IA, AI and Machine Learning as well as major site support and strategic systems such as Vision, CMSE, facilities and all major site support systems and platforms.

You will be encouraged to collaborate closely with all other site functions as well as develop positive relationships with external suppliers and strategic partners and vendors.

In particular you will be leading a multi-functional engineers across a broad range of automation teams and developing and introducing structures and systems to support the team development.

You will report directly into the engineering management function and work and agree key site pivotal initiatives to support a complementary team.

The candidate will need to have strong technical knowledge across a range of automation control systems as well as strong people skills.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise for problem solving new project development and design principles and project delivery.
  • Support the site with all major strategic decisions directly relating to the role and area team.
  • Lead a team of Engineers and technicians across a variety of automation disciplines including site support, Vision systems support, CMSE, Facilities support, OT Cybersecurity.
  • Support and develop close collaboration between associates in Engineering functions, R&D, Operations, Process, IT Regulatory, Quality Assurance, etc .
  • Actively engage in and lead the project development delivery and validation phases of all automation projects.
  • Development of key strategic relationships with other J&J sites institutions and third level institutions, to facilitate cross site sharing of ideas and collaboration.
  • Be a role model by setting the appropriate norms and behavioural traits for all members of the automation engineering team.
  • Develop effective automation development tools and systems to facilitate successful project development and implementation.
  • Actively supply to and participate in the development and implementation of JJVs Engineering strategic objectives.
  • Act as support for senior management team for technical support as needed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Primary Degree (Level 8) in an appropriate engineering or Computer Science with minimum 5 years experience.
  • Proven experience with automated control systems.
  • Strong PLC development background in Siemens S7, APT, Allen Bradley ControlLogix 5000, Pilz Safety PLCs and Wonderware Intouch/ArchestrA HMI software.
  • Previous experience leading teams
  • Strong solid understanding of and application of I4.0.
  • Knowledge of printer systems, vision systems, robotics, BCR and RFID systems would be beneficial.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, root cause analysis and risk assessments with a strong attention to detail.
  • Confirmed ability to work on own initiative and deliver results.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with proven leadership abilities.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing and validation in a regulated (FDA or IMB) environment an advantage.
  • Must be flexible and able to run multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Experience of lean concepts such as 5S and standard work would be an advantage.
