The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life.
LDWF is seeking a botanist to fulfill dual roles as Wildlife Diversity Program (WDP) and Kisatchie National Forest field botanist. This botanist position will work primarily in one of two areas: (1) Calcasieu and Kisatchie Ranger Districts with WDP work focused in south Louisiana or (2) Winn, Catahoula, and Caney Ranger Districts with WDP work focused in north Louisiana. Applicants should be highly experienced in field botany (survey methodology, plant identification, taxonomy, and specimen preparation) and be proficient with mapping software. This position will conduct field inventories for rare plants and natural communities and will contribute to habitat stewardship implementation projects, especially prescribed fire and herbicide applications. In addition to these skills, this position requires excellent oral and written communication abilities to facilitate discussions with people of all knowledge levels. The successful candidate will routinely interact with the United States Forest Service and other public and private landowners.

The Biologist position participates in a Career Progression Group (CPG) and is advertised to be filled as a Biologist 1, 2 or 3. This position will be filled as a:
  • Job Appointment (a period that will not exceed four years) may be converted to Probational Appointment should funding become available.
Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a Probational appointment if selected.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A baccalaureate degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries management, animal science, forestry, natural resources, or conservation.
NOTE:
Examples of non-qualifying degrees are science education (of any discipline), geology, geography, nuclear science, and agribusiness.
NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
