Certified Peer Recovery Specialist
Job description
The Certified Peer recovery specialist is directly supervised by the ACT Team’s, Team Leader. The Peer is Self-identifying as an individual with a serious mental illness who is currently or formally a recipient of mental health services and is in the process of their own recovery. Functions as a fully integrated team member to provide personal insight about the recovery process and what it is like to experience recovery from a serious mental illness. Provides input and support about the recovery process, symptom management and skills needed to maintain progress towards recovery. Provides peer counseling and support to individuals served, families, team staff and acts as liaison with community resources. Provides services with intent to maximize individuals' quality of life, daily functioning, and ongoing prevention of hospitalization for mental health concerns. Works to develop trusting relationships with individuals served while providing peer counseling and consultation to individual clients and families.
Responsibilities:
1. Actively participates in daily ACT team meetings for client treatment planning needs.
2. On an optional basis, will provide clinical treatment on weekends and holidays with compensation according to Policy and Procedures.
3. Provides input into the development of client Individualized Service Plans (ISP) and recommends changes to the ISP as needed.
4. Provides leadership to other team members in understanding and supporting individual’s recovery plan.
5. Provide coaching and consultation to clients to promote recovery and self-direction.
6. Facilitate wellness management and recovery strategies (e.g., Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP), Illness Management and Recovery (IMR), or other deliberate wellness strategies).
7. Provides cross-training to other team members in recovery principles and strategies.
8. Provide expertise and consultation from a mental health consumer perspective to the team and client’s family as appropriate regarding clients’ experiences with symptoms of mental illness and recovery plans.
9. Provide direct services to clients including but not limited to teaching independent living skills, accessing needed community resources such as social services housing, and financial supports, identifying and accessing self-help support groups, support for accessing community options that encourage social and recreational outlets, support for education and development of self-worth and role in client’s community.
10. Assists individuals with general problem solving. Assures safety needs are addressed and monitored.
11. Advocates for services on behalf of individuals and their families/care givers as needed. Reviews human rights and responsibilities with individuals and/or guardians as outlined in the ICT Services, Inc. policies and procedures. Documents and reports suspected violations of client’s rights immediately as required by policy.
12. Organizes and leads individual and group social and recreational activities to increase social experiences and provide opportunities to practice social skills and receive feedback and support.
13. Maintains all communications, written or verbal, with respect and confidentiality and complies with HIPPA standards and regulations.
14. Increase awareness of and support client participation in self-help programs, consumer advocacy organizations and other community resources that support and promote recovery models.
15. Help clients identify, understand, and address stigma and discrimination against
people with mental illness and develop plans to reduce self-stigma.
Candidate Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and abilities
1. Personal experience with mental illness and recovery and a willingness and ability to share the recovery perspective with individuals served and ACT team members.
2. At least one year of clinical stability and recovery as evidenced by no psychiatric hospitalizations for treatment for the previous 12 months leading up to the time of hire.
3. Self-awareness of symptom management and positive coping strategies to maintain mental health stability.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of basic human care giving practices and resources available to help individuals in the community.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of the nature of serious mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and substance use disorders.
6. Knowledge of assessments, individual service plans, quarterly reviews, contact progress notes and their uses in service planning, implementation and evaluation.
7. Basic knowledge of use of medications in the care of individuals served.
8. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely both written and verbal, and working knowledge of computers and word processing.
9. Initiative, resourcefulness, and ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
10. Knowledge of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services
(DBHDS) regulations for providers of mental health services.
11. Knowledge of relevant Medicaid guidelines.
12. Possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
13. Acceptable background and Central Registry check.
Education and Experience:
Must have a minimum of High School Diploma (Graduated from an accredited university with a bachelor’s degree preferred.)
Must hold an active certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist from the Virginia Department of Health Professions.
Has successfully completed facilitator training in Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP).
Has successfully completed training in Wellness Management and Recovery (WMR) interventions.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $17.00 - $18.00 per hour
