Job Summary

Reporting to the President, the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) leads the development and implementation of Carnegie Corporation of New York’s comprehensive communications strategies in direct support of the Corporation’s mission.

The CCO must demonstrate a strong level of expertise and commitment to leading best practices and institutional internal and external communications; developing and expanding a strong social media presence; stewarding institutional public affairs.

Working closely with leadership, communications professionals, and program staff, the CCO provides a bold and dynamic vision for articulating the Corporation’s areas of distinction and for establishing and assessing goals for disseminating information to target audiences.

The CCO develops internal Corporation communications strategies and ensures that the Corporation is well-positioned both to respond and anticipate issues that are likely to have an impact on the grantee community.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and drive a communications strategy for disseminating knowledge from our grantees and other matters important to the Corporation.
  • Provide vision and lead the development and implementation of comprehensive communications and public affairs strategies in collaboration with leadership to drive awareness and affinity among target audiences, program areas, and grantees.
  • Manage a team of communications leaders to ensure an integrated professional high performing team.
  • Develop collaborative and efficient processes required to implement communications and public affairs strategies and provide effective guidance for implementation.
  • Provide advice and counsel to Corporation leaders on communication, crisis response, and public affairs matters.
  • Implement day-to-day media outreach by pitching grantee initiatives to local, regional, and national media.
  • Work with the President on securing high-profile coverage for the Corporation’s leaders.
  • Provide Corporation program leaders with strategic marketing and creative communications guidance and support to advance their respective goals.
  • Lead the Corporation’s graphic identity efforts, including trademark licensing.
  • Lead digital and social media strategy. Shape messaging and guide strategies and tactics deployed on social media platforms, email, and digital ads.
  • Write and edit persuasive external and internal documents such as press releases, media advisories, op-eds, letters to the editor, editorial board memos, fact sheets, talking points, and communications plans.
  • Have a strong understanding of the media landscape surrounding the Corporation’s program areas and identify opportunities to participate in ongoing conversations.
  • Develop and consistently update press lists across program areas, compile news clippings, and coordinate with external vendors.
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of relationships in the media to ensure coverage the Corporation’s initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Dynamic communicator with superior interpersonal skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree, plus ten years of experience in fields related to the duties of this position.
  • Visionary leader with the ability to direct comprehensive marketing, communications, and public relations strategies to advance Corporation goals.
  • Ability to lead organizational crisis and issue management communication.
  • Demonstrable commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Successful experience leading large-scale strategic efforts and large teams within a complex, decentralized organization.
  • Experienced and successful manager of a communications team.

Salary Range

$290,000-$310,000/year
