Job Summary
WSOC Charlotte is in search of a Full-time Climate Beat Reporter for station newscasts. The successful candidate will excel at regularly breaking and enterprising significant, local stories. These seasoned journalists love to dig for extra information, cultivate sources, love to be live in the field and expect to win. This individual is expected to be skilled at using social media to gather information on stories, and to break stories.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Report on how climate change is affecting life across the Carolinas, including its impact on weather patterns, the economy, recreation, agriculture, wildlife and energy
- Create content for all CMG news products – Eyewitness News, wsoctv.com, WSOC Now and Noticias Charlotte (Telemundo)
- Collaborate with other climate reporters in the region and with WSOC’s Severe Weather Team 9 to increase the frequency and breadth of reporting
- Leverage WSOC’s local and national investigative resources to dig deeper into climate change stories
- Be able to shoot and edit when needed, while also able to collaborate with photographers, editors and graphic artists on higher profile stories
- Enterprise stories by developing sources and contacts.
- Write and produce news stories for television, web, and mobile.
- Make creative use of live technology to help tell a story.
- Understand and implement station's research-based goals.
- Enterprise stories, provide active live shots, and use process story-telling techniques.
- Utilize social media/digital platforms.
- Must be able to work under tight deadlines and respond quickly to breaking news.
- Reporter maybe asked to make public appearances for the station.
- Schedule may include nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed.
What We Look For
WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
- BA Degree in Journalism, Communications, or Other is strongly preferred.
