Program Summary

These guidelines pertain to the Fellowship to be awarded for the 2023—2024 academic year. Corewell Health West Office of Research and Education offers a one-year Public Health Training Fellowship with mentorship from an infectious disease provider, microbiology and advanced technology laboratory technical directors and advisor of data science. The fellowship is supported by Corewell Health West and funding from the MDHHS MI-SAPPHIRE program award. The fellowship will provide a salary of $67,468, plus benefits, for the fellowship term of July 1, 2023—June 30, 2024. All materials/supplies to support the identified training will be provided by the mentor/program.

Applicant Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be interested in an academic career in public health, clinical research and have completed an MD, PhD, DO or MBBS degree.

  • Applicant must be in good standing in their position/location/program, and not be on any type of corrective action status (including learning plan, remediation, probation, suspension).

  • Residents and fellows may, with their program director’s prior approval, interrupt their training to complete this one-year research fellowship.

  • Applicants on a J-1 Visa currently participating in a Spectrum Health/Michigan State University residency or fellowship program must show documentation that the proposed area of study is a designated ACGME program or qualifies as “non-standard” training as designated by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Grads (ECFMG). All final J-1 applicants must be approved by ECFMG prior to final employment contract/approval.

  • A resident/fellow in a Spectrum Health/Michigan State University program in the cap-building phase (the first five training years of a newly accredited program) may not apply.

  • The Fellowship is not a remote position. All fellows will be required to be onsite at a Corewell Health West campus location, with hybrid flexibility supported by the research mentor. Work location will be determined by research mentor, however will include at a minimum: 35 Michigan Clinical Lab, 115 Michigan Advanced Technology Lab, Helen Devos Children’s Hospital, and 400 Monroe Grand Rapids Research Center.

  • All travel, housing, transportation and applicable arrangements are at the cost of the fellow.

Project Criteria

  • For this fellowship, training is defined as “patient-oriented work conducted with human subjects, or translational developments specifically designed to develop treatments or enhance diagnosis of disease. These areas of focus include epidemiologic or behavioral studies, trials, studies of disease mechanisms, the development of new technologies and health services and assay development.”

  • Disease-related studies not directly involving humans or human tissue also are encouraged if the primary goal is the development of patient therapies, diagnostic tests, or other tools to prevent or mitigate disease.

  • Project/plan should represent the applicant’s original work. However, the applicant is expected and encouraged to develop this plan in collaboration with their mentor. It is appropriate for the proposed project to be specifically related to the mentor’s ongoing portfolio of public health projects, but not required.

  • All projects must include a timeline with specific outcomes in order to ensure successful project completion in 12 months (no extensions will be granted).

  • The pathway for future funding streams to build upon the sustainability of the project beyond the fellowship year and translate the findings of the work into the clinical or public health domain.

  • If applicant is a current Corewell Health/Michigan State University resident or fellow, he/she must include a letter of reference from their program director, or the application will not be considered


Evaluation and Selection

Applications are evaluated by an identified internal committee based on the following criteria:

  • Applicant’s ability and promise in an academic career in clinical research

  • Quality and originality of the research plan, including the impact on patients

  • Ability to complete research project by the 12 month timeline

  • Quality and nature of the training to be provided by the mentor


Applications are evaluated by a Corewell Health West internal review committee comprised of the future mentors and hiring leaders. The top applicants, and their current mentor, will be required to participate in a virtual or in-person interview with the review committee. During the interview, the applicant and mentor must present a PowerPoint presentation, which outlines the proposed research plan (with headers).


Reports

  • Quarterly progress reports are due on the following dates: September 29, 2023, December 29, 2023, and March 29, 2024

  • Final project report is due before June 30, 2024

  • Final project presentation by the research fellow and research mentor will be given to the Office of Research and Education leadership, Senior Academic Advisors, program director (if applicable), Corewell Health West Michigan Foundation representative(s), and other leadership as identified. This should occur 2-3 weeks prior to the research fellow’s last day.

  • If the final project report is not completed by the identified due date, the fellow may jeopardize their ability to restart their training program in a timely manner.
