Perform manual and semi-skilled work operating a variety of hand tools and light motorized equipment to assist with cleaning, inspecting and repairing sewer and storm lines and systems.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assist in cleaning and inspecting storm and sewer lines and manholes.

  • Follow established procedures and guidelines to repair, clean, and inspect sewer lines and manholes.

  • Operate hand and power tools, such as shovels, rakes, utility saws, chainsaws, drills, pipe cutters, blowers, motors, torches, portable radios, jack hammers, welding machines, and air compressors.

  • Assist in the repair of sewer and storm systems.

  • Use hand and power tools, such as chainsaws, jack hammers, air compressors, and the like, to clear brush and debris, dig holes and ditches, repair and adjust equipment, prepare surfaces, and remove snow and ice.

  • Maintain lawns, sidewalks and parking areas; shovel and remove debris and trash; operate other related equipment.

  • Haul sand, gravel, rock and other materials to and from sites; haul equipment, tools and supplies.

  • Assist with skilled labor tasks, such as inlet construction, welding, minor surveying, setting concrete forms, placing and finishing concrete, and laying asphalt.

  • Assist with the repair of sewer liners and storm water drainage facilities and manholes.

  • Purchase, pick up and deliver supplies, parts, and materials.

Ancillary Job Functions
  • Ensure and maintain a safe work environment including job site and equipment.

  • Maintain records of activities; complete forms and maintain computer-based logs.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
  • Some high school or equivalent required.

  • Less than one year of experience in general building and grounds maintenance and repair work.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position
  • Some knowledge of building and grounds maintenance and repair practices and procedures.

  • Some knowledge of light motorized equipment and hand and power tools.

  • Some knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools, chemicals, and heavy physical labor.

  • Good independent judgement.

  • Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to operate motor vehicles and use radios and other related equipment.

  • Ability to deal courteously and authoritatively with the public.

  • Ability to operate mechanical equipment for snow removal.

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

  • Ability to withstand extended periods of raking and shoveling dirt or gravel.

  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate a variety of tools to perform manual and semi-skilled construction or equipment related tasks.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees.

  • Ability to communicate by radio and in person with the lead operator to receive instruction and provide information for the cleaning and inspection of sewers.

  • Ability to work on-call and respond at all hours of the day/night.

  • Ability to use maps to find way from a known point to an unknown point.

  • Ability to explain policies and procedures.

  • Ability to evaluate on-site conditions including topography, construction corridors, trench depths, etc.

  • Ability to handle highly emotional situations with citizens or contractors who are angry and upset.

  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.

  • Ability to work in extreme heat or cold conditions.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job
  • Exposed to very loud noise levels.

  • Frequently required to work in varying, inclement outdoor weather conditions; in hazardous traffic conditions, such as doing construction in the street; near moving mechanical parts; and in high, dangerous places, such as trenches.

  • Occasionally required to work in confined spaces such as manholes and storm boxes and in wet, humid conditions such as trenches.

  • May frequently be exposed to vibrations, mechanical oils, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, or potentially hazardous bodily fluids; may occasionally be exposed to hazardous or cancer-causing agents or chemicals.

  • Must deal with raw sewage, flooding, and basement backups.

  • Occasionally required to sit; talk; listen; push; stand; walk; drive; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and climb or balance.

  • May rarely be required to move up and down from/to a sitting position on the floor.

  • Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.

  • May be required to lift 100 pounds or more.

  • Requires concentrated attention from the worker.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Hours/Days
M-F 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Stand-by call in required approximately one week every two months.
