Big-D Construction has an opportunity for a Concrete Apprentice to join our team of construction professionals in Soda Springs, ID.

Experience/Training:

  • Minimum 2 year of experience in different formwork and systems, concrete placement and removal, and concrete finishing (if necessary)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements:

  • Understanding of various tools and components of systems
  • Basic understanding in reading, interpreting, and processing shop drawings, plans, specifications and other documents is required.
  • Basic OSHA and similar training is necessary; training will be provided.
  • Ability to identify safety concerns and issues for team members.
  • Ability to follow verbal directions, implement changes, and monitor material and equipment usage.
  • Ability to identify proper tools for specific functions.
  • Ability to listen and follow directions.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to adhere to strict quality control measures.
  • Ability to read and understand a tape measure and/or other measuring devices
  • Ability to read and understand safety signs, instructions for tools and equipment

Duties, Responsibilities and Expectations: (other duties may be assigned to meet business needs)

  • Assist in building rough wooden and steel structures, such as concrete forms, scaffolds, and other rough carpentry items according to sketches, blueprints, or oral instructions.
  • Assists with installation of protection (floors, walls, casework, etc.), installation of doors, hardware, trim, division 10 specialties, completion of minor punch list items and minor touch-up, demolition, and other daily items that might arise due to project conditions, schedule, and needs from project management.
  • Assists foreman for the following activities in their crew: developing and building a working relationship with co-workers, motivating crew to ensure quality and sustained Big-D values, evaluating information to determine compliance with standards, coordinating work and activities of others, resolving conflicts and negotiating with others.
  • Inspects equipment, structures, premises, and/or materials for evidence of deterioration or damage.
  • Interprets the meaning of information from plans and supervisors for others.
  • Basic understanding of grade and elevation according to plans.
  • Assists with performing safety inspections as necessary per direction from supervisor.
  • Assists with assembling and fastening material together to construct wood or metal framework of structure, using bolts, nails, or screws.
  • Assists with anchoring and bracing forms and other structures in place, using nails, bolts, anchor rods, steel cables, planks, wedges, and timbers, or other forms of attachments.
  • Assists with erecting forms, framework, scaffolds, hoists, roof supports, or chutes, using hand tools, plumb rule, and level.
  • Assists in fabricating, assembling, and/or dissembling parts by hand or by woodworking and metalworking machines.
  • Climbs ladders, concrete formwork, or any other structures necessary to erect formwork and access elevated areas.
  • Adheres to and performs functions according to company and OSHA safety guidelines.
  • Updates and uses relevant knowledge to complete own work.
  • Moves and lifts heavy objects.
  • Performs demolition or repairs on existing structures, and repairs cracks, defects, or damage in installed building materials.
  • Uses basic carpentry and concrete fabrication techniques.
  • Regular, timely, and predictable attendance is required for this position.
  • Performs other duties as determined and required by project need.
  • Applies adhesives, caulking, sealants, or coatings.
  • Digs holes or trenches for foundations, posts, poles, or related items.
  • Cuts, shapes, fits, or joins wood or other construction materials.
  • Cuts or saws boards, timbers, or plywood to required dimension, using handsaw, power saw, or woodworking machine.
  • Bores holes in timber, masonry or concrete walls, using power drill.
  • Operates vehicles, mechanized devices, and/or equipment as required and if certified.
  • Marks reference points or cutting lines on work pieces, and measures materials or distances, using pencil, scriber, chalk box, square, measuring tape, and/or rule to lay out work.
  • Load and unload construction materials

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and/or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. The employee must also lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee may be required to lift heavy objects in awkward positions that require flexible range of motion. Specific vision abilities include close vision and peripheral vision. The employee is also required to frequently inspect the project and will be exposed to ongoing construction and various weather conditions, including rain, sleet, snow, wind, and heat. The noise level in the work environment may range from moderate to loud. The employee is also required to frequently walk on uneven surfaces. Safety requirements necessitate no language barrier exist between employees and supervisors.

Hazards: May be exposed to extremes of heat and cold as well as certain unsafe environments; occasionally works near moving equipment and mechanical parts and electrical equipment; possible exposure to fumes or airborne particles; possible exposure to internal liquids. This is a safety sensitive position where a momentary lapse of attention can result in serious injury or death. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally very loud. Must follow all safety requirements carefully.
