The Controller has ownership over the accounting reporting for all the business lines and leads a team of six accounting staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead and further automate month-end close and financial reporting processes.

  • Lead, support, coach, and develop staff to improve skillsets, support professional growth, and enhance the performance of the team.

  • Identify and implement process improvements, increase efficiencies, and maintain state-of-the-art practices. Assess, recommend, and implement software system upgrades as needed.

  • Strategically drive operations through thorough understanding and optimization of agency contracts.

  • Work and communicate with the finance department leadership to plan and coordinate accounting, reporting, and analysis. Identify key financial drivers and build reporting tools to assist program management staff.

  • Assist in preparing reports for the Board, Finance Committee, and Investment Committee in the performance of their governance functions.

  • Lead and manage the preparation of regulatory financial reporting including but not limited to tax returns for non-profit entities (990 and AG990).

  • Manage day to day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, cash flow/banking relations, account reconciliations, and general accounting.

  • Manage the administration of annual business insurance renewals.

  • Manage the audit process and deliver clean and efficient audits.

  • Monitor and analyze investment activity and performance.

  • Take lead and ownership in a variety of special projects.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or finance from an accredited college or university (CPA and/or MBA are a plus).

  • Five years of senior level accounting management experience with a government-funded not-for-profit agency, with an annual budget of at least $20 million.

  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and not-for-profit accounting systems

Skills/Knowledge:

  • In-depth experience of not-for-profit social service agency operations and finances

  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills

  • Strong leadership skills in transforming operations and leading through change.

  • Energetic, forward thinking, innovative, creative

  • Strong accounting technical skills

  • Strong communication skills

  • Familiarity with Financial Edge accounting software, and experience with system implementations

  • Experience with multiple types of funding sources, including State, Federal, and local funding streams.

Environment and Scheduling:

  • Work is performed in administrative office as well as in association with group home settings, including but not limited to schools, residential facilities, and various community program settings. This is a full-time position, working five days per week.
  • Required to frequently sit, stand, and walk, sometimes for extended periods. Ability to walk up and down stairs
  • Must have visual, hearing and learning capabilities sufficient to perform essential functions defined.
