Collins Aerospace in Fairfield, CA is seeking a Data and Analytical Methods Engineer to support our Propulsion Systems business. The Data and Analytical Methods engineer is responsible for performing detailed analysis of energetic systems and assemblies in support of all aspects of the business. This role will directly interface with other engineering departments as well as Program Management and Operations. In this role, the candidate will be expected to be able to perform any analysis necessary, including stress analysis (hand calculations or Finite Element Analysis), interior ballistics analysis, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for creating detailed plans and reports in to document all results. Finally, this role will be responsible for participating in department planning and long term strategies in support of improving and evolving the group capabilities.

The Collins Aerospace Propulsion Systems business located in Fairfield, CA designs, manufactures, and test various energetic devices. Many of our devices are system components which provide a safe means for a pilot’s ejection from fighter jets and helicopters. The team here manufactures a wide range of cartridge actuated devices, propellant actuated devices, and linear devices. These products proudly support various military and commercial applications.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform ballistic modeling to analyze and predict performance of energetic devices using internally developed and commercial software.

  • Perform detailed transient dynamics, nonlinear, and linear stress analysis.

  • Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of a wide variety of products.

  • Create detailed plans and reports to document the results of analyses performed.

  • Review Statements of Work from internal and external customers to develop labor estimates.

  • Participate in failure analysis investigations and perform analysis in support of the team.

  • Interface with operations and test personnel to develop and execute plans for performing experiments to provide inputs to or validate analytical models.

  • Participate in brainstorming efforts for design and/or new specification conditions as required to provide reliable cost effective solutions.

  • Work within the greater Collins, Raytheon, or academic communities to advance technologies and methods in support of the business.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field or in absence of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience

  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required. https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-22/chapter-I/subchapter-M/part-120/subpart-C/section-120.62

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong modeling and analysis skills of complex engineering problems spanning multiple physics domains (solid mechanics, fluids, thermal, etc.).

  • Experience using Finite Element Analysis software (LS-Dyna, Ansys, Abaqus, etc)

  • Knowledge and application of non-linear analyses, including non-linear, strain-rate dependent, and state-of-stress dependent material models.

  • Proficient in programming; MATLAB, FORTRAN, C/C++, or Visual Basic skills preferred.

  • Proficient in solid modeling, NX preferred.

  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new analysis/modeling software.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical customers.

  • Must be proficient at prioritizing and managing work load, as well as have very strong decision making and administrative abilities.

  • Self-motivated and ability to drive projects to completion.

  • Ability to multi task between multiple projects and work in a fast paced environment.

  • Strong verbal and written skills, with a focus on customer interaction.

The salary range for this role is 62,000 USD - 124,000 USD; however, Raytheon Technologies considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
