Opportunity

Beloved Youth is hiring its first Director!! This is an exciting opportunity for the right leader to build and launch an innovative strategy toward ending youth incarceration, resourcing families and communities most harmed by the carceral state, and developing a replicable model for the country.

Beloved Youth is the first project of Beloved Community Housing, a new housing organization devoted to supporting the self-determination of young people and their families impacted by the juvenile and criminal justice systems through innovations in housing. It is a continuum of care model that resources young people and their families/guardians while advocating for their needs and desires, with the goal of ending reliance on the ineffective, harmful, and expensive incarceral and congregate care models.

OUR IMPACT

Beloved evolved from the Young Women Freedom Center’s (YWFC) temporary COVID housing program – a pilot housing program for women and trans people of all genders leaving jails and prisons. After a very successful pilot, Beloved launched as an independent project grounded in the methodologies and frameworks that have made YWFC so successful for the past 30-years. After refining our Program model and securing seed funding, we are now poised to launch Beloved state-wide in San Francisco, Alameda, Santa Clara, and LA counties.

Position Overview

The Director of Beloved Youth must be a seasoned leader with at least 5 years of experience in a leadership position with a demonstrated track record of success in launching, building, and nurturing innovative and transformative projects. They will be working closely with a small team to successfully launch the Beloved Youth in 4-5 pilot counties in California with the goal of demonstrating a successful community-based model. The position will focus primarily on fund development, securing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, mentoring and supporting team members in the execution of the program, working closely with the evaluation team, developing strategies for communications to the field, and holding the vision.

This opportunity calls for a highly committed and adaptable professional, who excels at motivating others, and thrives in a startup environment. We are also looking for someone with deep knowledge of the Juvenile justice system, dependency system, and ideally the landscape in California. We encourage people with direct experience to apply and require that candidates are able to work closely with directly impacted people.

Key Responsibilities

  • In alignment with the strategic plan, develop and carry out the vision, strategic direction, and innovative approaches of Beloved Youth in partnership with the President, staff, board, and key stakeholders.
  • With support from the team, serve as the lead fundraiser for Beloved Youth, create and monitor the organization’s fundraising strategy, including coordinating and developing relationships, developing proposals and reports, and other fund development activities.
  • Work in close partnership with the team to assess and update Beloved Youth’s strategic direction, assess programmatic effectiveness, monitor implementation strategies, and closely monitor outcomes of the pilot to iterate and pivot where needed and communicate to the President and Board on critical organizational matters.
  • Oversee and support organizational staff as they develop and implement strategies for programs, campaigns, communications, and coalition building that further the vision and strategic direction of Beloved Youth.
  • Hold the “big picture” strategy so that campaigns and projects managed by staff are integrated and have the most impact and serve as a connector, mentor, and guide for staff teams.
  • Develop and maintain key relationships and contracts aligned with the purpose of fulfilling the goals of Beloved.
  • Lead the steam in strategy development to overcome barriers to the successful implementation of Beloved Youth in each county.
  • Oversee the financial health of the organization.
  • Lead internally and externally with an eye toward excellence, equity, collaboration, and inclusivity. Model leadership that values rigorous analysis and a focus on impact, while honoring the skills, talents, and wellness of a diverse staff and holding the many different (and sometimes competing) viewpoints of our base, constituents, key stakeholders, and partners.
  • Represent Beloved Youth to the community, peer organizations, and coalition partners, through working relationships, and public and media relationships.

Qualifications

The Director will have the following skills, experience, and attributes

  • Deep knowledge of the juvenile and dependency systems and the California landscape
  • Must be able to work well with people from a diverse backgrounds and across organizational structure
  • Must have experience and be excited about building new systems and working in a fast-paced and growing organizational structure
  • Must be able to handle change well and have an understanding of change management
  • Believes in the mission and vision of the organization and uses the values and vision as the foundation for systems development, policies, practices, and decision-making while upholding the highest standards for accounting and finance management
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills
  • Proven track record in supporting new and developing leaders in reaching their full potential and contributing to the success of the team

This is a hybrid position that will require travel throughout California and the candidate should be based in the Bay Area or Los Angeles.

Compensation and Benefits

Beloved offers a competitive salary based on the organization’s compensation philosophy, which is grounded in market data. Compensation is commensurate with experience, ranging from $140,000-165,000. We also offer comprehensive health benefits and top-of-the-market paid time off including two weeks of vacation, 2 additional weeks in December, and 1 week in July, plus 11 holidays. The organization also participates in the Cal-savers retirement program.
