Direct and supervise the work activities and responsibilities of 25+ Heat Plant staff members. Supervise, coordinate, and manage all aspects of HVAC equipment and systems at all SLCC campuses. Provide Facilities Services oversight for the Redwood/Taylorsville Campus. Ensure all Redwood Campus facility assets are cared for cost-effectively, and in a way that optimizes the asset life cycle and meets the needs of end-users. Work with various departments within Facilities Services and provide support supervision (secondary oversight) to ensure that work is being planned, communicated, and carried out in a way the meets the needs of involved parties.
Regularly inspect facilities for maintenance deficiencies and take action on findings. Provide reporting and second level oversight for snow removal at Redwood Campus 24/7.

Develop, build, maintain and (when necessary) repair relationships with end-user groups at SLCC Redwood/Taylorsville Campus. Work closely with the Senior Director of Facilities Services (oversees all other SLCC Campuses) to create alignment in approach to campus management so that efforts are reasonably unified and standardized. This position is the face of the SLCC Redwood Campus Facilities Services Division to faculty, staff, students, administration, and other patrons – anyone who uses or interacts with the facilities in any way. It is important to see and treat patrons as customers of the Facilities Services operation. The incumbent will partner and build relationships with other college departments, vendors, and various public and private entities. These efforts are very important because they contribute greatly to the overall environment and appeal of each campus.
Responsible for the supervision of a supporting staff of full-time and part-time employees for all HVAC support services at all SLCC Campuses. Ensure that all campuses have necessary coverage for a 24/7 schedule.

Provide excellent customer service to create a comfortable environment in which to work, study, teach and learn at all campuses. Supervise day-to-day operations of the HVAC department.
Direct department goals and visions and help implement them. Advise and provide input on any related equipment purchases, or changes to systems as a result of remodels or modifications.
Set up accountability process for and ensure training of HVAC staff.

Review and make recommendations to design and adhere to SLCC & DFCM standards on remodels, upgrades, replacements, and new construction projects. Have heavy involvement in the reviewing of contract documents and plans to ensure that college standards are met for remodel projects and new building projects.
Develop OPR’s and transmit to designers for incorporation into projects. Estimate, update, and maintain inventory records and project materials necessary for project completion. Work with Campus administration including the President, Vice President, Deans, and Directors to ensure that Facilities related needs are prioritized and met.
Coordinate the energy procurement and utilization of the campus’s central utility plants to maximize efficiency and minimize cost. Provide direct oversight and management of the annual operating budget for Building Maintenance expenditures throughout the fiscal year.
Establishes annual budget in partnership with AVP of FS and Finance personnel. Budget Center Manager for the Redwood Campus and Heat Plant budgets.

Coordinate with the energy manager to Identify building mechanical problems impacting energy consumption and production; and analyze heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting systems to determine optimum operating conditions. Advise maintenance shops on energy efficient operation of building mechanical systems.
Develop and recommend maintenance project priorities for equipment and operational strategies to maximize operating efficiency. Create and sustain an environment that fosters the SLCC values of collaboration, community, inclusivity, learning, innovation, integrity, and trust. Evaluate team members’ performance, recommend staffing levels, work with Facilities Human Resources on all training requirements for staff, and act on personnel issues as necessary.Serve as a staff advocate to attract, develop, and retain a diverse workforce. Participate in the selection of key leadership and management hires for the Facilities department.

Ensures compliance with OSHA, fire codes, city ordinances, ASHRE, LEED, SMACNA, etc. Determines division training needs and works with section and unit heads in developing training programs or in securing outside resources to address training needs. Is responsible for department training programs.

Works under broad direction. Full accountability for own technical work or project/supervisory responsibilities. Receives assignments in the form of objectives. Establishes own milestones, team objectives and delegates assignments. Work is often self-initiated.

Influences organization, customers, and peers within industry on contribution of specialization. Significant responsibility for the work of others and for the allocation of resources. Decisions impact on success of assigned projects i.e. results, deadlines and budget. Develops business relationships with customers. Trains, manages performance, and development of employees.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Develops, builds, maintains and (when necessary) repairs relationships with end-user groups at every SLCC Campus except Redwood/Taylorsville (which will be directed by the Director of Heat Plant & Redwood Campus). These two positions work together to create alignment in their campus management approach so that efforts are reasonably unified and standardized.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Facility Management, Construction Management, Business Management or a related field.
  • 5 – 7+ years’ experience in facility management.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Swimming Pool and Spa Operations Certificate. Universal EPA certified.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for extensive travel to and from all campus locations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • EFP and/or CEFP Credentials through APPA.
  • Building Automation Certified. Licensed P.E.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Organizational and managerial skills for multiple activities and processes concurrently.
  • Ability to operate effectively under stress. Must have excellent human relations skills.
  • Must have knowledge and expertise in building systems, especially HVAC systems.
  • Must have working knowledge of Building Codes, Fire Codes, and the laws, rules and regulations of the State of Utah.
  • Knowledge of Federal regulatory agencies such as OSHA, EPA, ADA, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand SDS label/sheet.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to policies and procedures.
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, with multiple deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Must be experienced in facility management and project management, preferably in a college setting.
  • Must be computer literate; i.e., ability to interact through e-mail systems and computer programs including, CMMS, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel. Must have effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to identify and handle details.
  • Ability to work with confidential information.
  • Ability to supervise and train others.
  • Possess strong leadership.
