Director, Library & Learning Services
Rasmussen University

The Director of Library and Learning Services is an academic leader for our faculty, staff, students, graduates, and community members providing successful resource use to achieve academic and professional goals. As such, the Director of Library and Learning Services collaborates with Rasmussen community members including Vice Presidents, Directors, Deans, Faculty, students and other key stakeholders to determine library and learning center resource and service needs as well as inform development of proactive and responsive information literacy tools.

Responsibilities:

Professional Guidance and Communication:

  • Engage in active listening and communication with peers, faculty, staff, students, and campus constituents with a solution-oriented approach.
  • Exercise tact, diplomacy, and discretion in dealing with sensitive circumstances.
  • Engage with current and potential library users through various social media channels.
  • Assess library user interactions and transactions using standard documentation tools and methods.
  • Regularly host and participate in campus, regional, and library and learning services team meetings.
  • Standardize, develop and distribute library and learning resources and communication in various mediums, either individually or in collaboration with team members.

Training, Professional Development, and Networking:

  • Directly assists in onboarding of new team members along with assigning specific tasks for the purpose of development.
  • Coach, mentor and guide members of the library and learning center team through their training.
  • Invite input from each employee when faced with new challenges and share ownership and visibility in order to devise and implement solutions.
  • Motivate employees and maintain a climate in which people want to perform at their best.
  • Create and present all quarterly and yearly performance reviews for reporting team members.
  • Represent the University in local, state, regional and national library consortia, professional organizations, and conferences.
  • Actively engage in and contribute to internal and external training and professional development opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain a professional peer network across the University library and Learning Center teams.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Collaborate with peers across teams to provide proactive, high-level library support services, as well as oversight of support for intermediate and advanced reference services, to students, faculty, and staff using a variety of communication channels.
  • Provide oversight and deliver information literacy instruction in multiple modalities to individuals and groups of students, faculty, staff, and community members using objectives for information literacy instruction and established best practices for lesson plan construction, delivery, and assessment.
  • Identify, use, and direct users to the most appropriate service or platform for their needs (i.e., webinars, Personal Support Center, support case tracking, online courses, etc.).
  • In collaboration with librarians and learning service coordinators, create and advocate web and print-based instructional and programming resources.
  • Provide coaching and instruction for students, faculty, and staff on academic integrity and plagiarism prevention techniques.
  • Track and assess library services and library resource usage; analyze data to improve resources and services and inform innovation.
  • Contribute to University-wide assessment processes.

Team Collaboration:

  • Oversee resource development for University disciplines by providing University-wide collection development guidance, curriculum and instruction assistance, subject-specific information literacy instruction, and help with accreditation and licensing needs.
  • Manage librarian collaboration with faculty, to provide embedded workshops, webinars, and instruction on information literacy and learning services topics.
  • Communicate with peers across teams on library related concerns in a timely and prudent manner.
  • Establish frequent, cooperative communication with campus and regional team members in various departments to relay and receive information on library service and its impact on students, faculty, staff, campus, University, and community.
  • Engage campuses, learning services, and library personnel in creating mutual goals that ensure appropriate levels of academic support for students.

  • Anticipate future trends and collaboration with library and learning center leadership to craft a broad vision incorporating various individuals, teams, and organizational departments.

Service Orientation:

  • Participate in University events, including, but not limited to, graduation, orientation, community service days, campus outreach, and diversity programs.
  • Actively participate in library and learning center system-wide committees and serve as a representative for internal and external local, regional, and national committees.
  • Lead or co-lead diversity and general education programming in collaboration with faculty and staff.
  • Coordinate library system-wide events in conjunction with librarians and leadership.

Hiring and Building a Team:

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate direct reports along with student employees using established protocols.
  • Support training and development needs of library, learning center and student employees across the University.
  • Support onboarding of new library, learning center and campus team members (faculty, staff, administrators) through library and learning center orientation and training activities.
  • Develop, lead, and assess synchronous and asynchronous student employee training per need and national standards.

Position Requirements:

  • A master's degree is required.
  • Two or more years demonstrated experience in a leadership role(s) and serving on projects or committees.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as the University and student needs dictate, including evenings and weekends and at various sites.
  • Proven customer service experience in a professional environment.
  • Strong multi-tasking, organizational, planning, and coordination skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, flexible, patient, and solutions-oriented.
  • Able to set own priorities, work effectively under pressure, and meet frequently occurring deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must have a strong command of the English language, both in oral and written form, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of common academic databases and the basic structure of library information systems.
  • Familiarity with common forms of social media (Facebook, Twitter) and their use for student engagement in higher education.
  • Familiarity with webinar/webcasting/web conferencing software.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a both a leader and member of a team across other departments, both in person and virtually.
