About the Department
The College of Natural Resources (CNR) at North Carolina State University (NC State), where “the planet is our classroom,” has a compelling 90+ year history of creating value at the intersection between the natural and built environment. CNR is a tight knit community of passionate and caring people dedicated to improving the environments and communities in which we live, work, learn, and play. CNR’s comprehensive approach to teaching, research, extension, and engagement empowers our students and stakeholders, and encompasses the many and varied ways in which people’s physical, economic and social needs are met through the responsible use of natural resources.

The CNR Academic Affairs Office strives to develop the best stewards and leaders of natural resources for the future by focusing on initiatives throughout the whole student experience, from recruitment to graduation and beyond. CNR places a strong emphasis on enriching student development by providing student success services such as tutoring and by offering and promoting co-curricular experiences and other professional development opportunities to complement classroom learning. CNR’s high-quality academic offerings and its emphasis on hands-on learning are why it is an academic world leader in the sustainable use of natural resources.

Essential Job Duties
The Director of Career Advising and Professional Engagement in the College of Natural Resources (CNR) leads concerted initiatives that equip all students for career-readiness and enhance their overall professional growth. The Director also cultivates relationships with potential employers and alumni, and promotes student engagement experiences. As a newly established position, the inaugural Director has the opportunity to provide vision and strategic direction in CNR regarding employer engagement and the professional development of students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Director is under the guidance of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and works in close partnership with the NC State Career Development Center and the CNR academic units. The Director also works proactively to promote the CNR values.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Engage instructors, academic advisors, and other CNR personnel in cultivating student appreciation for career planning and professional growth.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate ongoing programs and activities for CNR that enhance the overall professional experiences for CNR students, with a particular emphasis on the development of leadership and other transferable skills.
  • Activate newly enrolled CNR undergraduate students to start planning their career journey by offering tailored programming and by collaborating with the program coordinators to integrate career engagement activities into first year and transfer student offerings.
  • Provide CNR students with regular communications regarding professional engagement experiences, upcoming events, and career-related opportunities specific to CNR majors.
  • Champion student peer activities and manage student groups such as peer career coaches and career ambassadors.
  • Work closely with the Graduate School to offer tailored programming for the distinct professional growth needs of masters and doctoral students.
  • Collaborate with the CNR Director of Recruitment Initiatives and Student Excellence to integrate career pathways into the student recruitment process.

Employer Engagement (30% of effort)
  • Establish and nurture relationships with industry, government agencies, communities, and other potential employers to maximize student opportunities for employment, internships, and other career building experiences. Establish and maintain a customer relationship management (CRM) system for tracking these engagements, and share access and potential opportunities with relevant CNR entities.
  • Collaborate with CNR Advancement and academic programs to build opportunities for alumni, donors, and employers to engage with faculty and staff and to participate in the professional development process of students.
  • Lead the coordination of on-campus recruiting events for CNR majors, including annual career fairs and other engagement events with prospective employers. Manage the ePACK database for CNR jobs and educate students and employers on using it effectively.
