Foundation Summary
The Robert R. McCormick Foundation envisions a Chicagoland comprised of thriving communities where all individuals have the resources and opportunities to succeed, without regard to income, race, ethnicity, gender, or ZIP code. We invest in people and organizations across the region to develop educated, informed, and engaged communities.
The Foundation was established in 1955, upon the death of Colonel Robert R. McCormick, the longtime editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune. The Robert R. McCormick Foundation is one of the nation's largest foundations, with more than $2 billion in assets. Our philanthropy is focused on Chicago's South and West Sides and the following issues: early childhood education, public safety, community development, veterans, and journalism.
Since 2017, the McCormick Foundation has granted more than $200 million to non-profit organizations working to build thriving communities in Chicagoland and across Illinois, with an emphasis on Chicago’s South and West Sides. We invest in programs that support pathways to opportunities for individuals living where racial and economic disparities are concentrated, with a special focus on the Englewood and Little Village communities. This includes grantmaking to support youth and families, economic advancement, and safety.
About Cantigny Park
Located in Wheaton, Illinois, Cantigny Park is Col. Robert R. McCormick’s 500-acre estate, which encompasses a park, formal gardens, a museum dedicated to the 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, and a 27-hole public golf facility. Cantigny welcomes over 400,000 visitors each year to enjoy its education and recreational amenities and public and private events.
Cantigny’s gardens are developed for public enjoyment and education with a mix of woody plants, herbaceous perennial, and seasonal collections. In partnership, the garden included displays of plants native to Mexico and hosted programs inspired by Mexican culture.
Cantigny’s formal garden spaces include a rose garden; seasonal display gardens for annual and perennial flowering plants, woody plant collections, a hosta garden, a rock and gravel garden, a fountain display garden, a prairie view garden, pond garden, shade garden collections, a logarium, and an idea garden.
