Purpose:

The Endoscopy Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing individualized, age specific, culturally competent care to patients undergoing or recovering from anesthesia. As well as assist the gastroenterologist as needed during the procedure when assigned.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Related to Patient Care:

  • Provides care in an organized and timely manner ensuring the availability of supplies/equipment necessary to provide care to all age populations.
  • Displays an understanding of each patient’s cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturity modifies care approach appropriately.
  • Assists in procedure room setup/turnover and assists the endoscopist during procedures as needed (i.e., providing abdominal splinting and procuring specimens).
  • Ensures a safe environment for patients, visitors, and employees.

Related to Scope Management:

  • The Endoscopy Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing individualized, age specific, culturally competent care to patients undergoing or recovering from anesthesia
  • Assists the physician with procedures on the Endo Unit
  • Responsible for patient/family education throughout the Endo Unit stay
  • Responsible for meeting the Standards of Practice for Endo Nursing and managing all assigned personnel, supplies and equipment
  • Assist the gastroenterologist as needed during the procedure when assigned
  • Transport the Veteran safely to the recovery area upon determining the patient meets criteria for discharge from area, documenting responses to interventions, findings and reporting changes in patient status
  • Communicate hand off information regarding patient status to receiving unit prior to transfer, including emergency contact information for physician and family members identified by the patient
  • Implement cost containment measures.
  • Actively participate in the facility’s Infection Control plan.
  • Troubleshoot all endoscopic equipment and MD Reports program.

Related to Compliance:

  • Remains knowledgeable of and adheres to standards of GI practice and sterilization, facility policy/procedures and regulatory requirements (i.e., OSHA, HIPAA); provides input to policy and procedure review/revision.
  • Completes incident reporting in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Dresses appropriately for the position and maintains work area in a pristine manner.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and all applicable in-service training and staff development programs.

  • Interacts with all patients, visitors, co-workers, and physicians in a positive and professional manner to promote superior customer satisfaction.
  • Exhibits a positive attitude, flexibility, adaptability, and initiative.
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal skills with external customers (i.e., contract personnel, vendors).
  • Provides input for improving facility processes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Set priorities, anticipate needs, and manage multiple tasks concurrently, detail oriented.
  • Recognize an impending or actual crisis and initiate CPR or other emergency procedures as needed.
  • Provide clear, concise information to others.
  • Independently problem solve using business ethics and integrity.
  • Must be self-directed and able to work independently

Qualification Requirements:

  • Prefer One year of experience in Endoscopy
  • 1-2 years Endoscopy experience strongly preferred
  • Endoscopy/Day Surgery/PACU/Critical Care/Surgical Center experience required
  • Strong Med/Surg experience required
  • Excellent collaboration skills to facilitate successful interactions with physicians and team members
  • RN License-FL state or any other compact state
