Job description
The Instructor prepares for, teaches, and evaluates a variety of English classes, both face-to-face and online, for a diverse student body including dual-enrolled students. The instructor keeps regular office hours and devotes a minimum of thirty-five hours per week to performance of his or her duties on campus and at dual-enrollment sites. Teaching assignments will involve travel and may be changed to fit the College’s needs. In addition to classroom instruction, the Instructor serves on college and division committees, advises students on academic matters, oversees the Sigma Kappa Delta honor society chapter, and takes on other assignments, as delegated by the Division Chairperson, the Dean of Instruction, or the President of the College.

Course preparation: The instructor plans carefully for each class session. The instructor prepares a course syllabus stating the objectives, requirements, and procedures for evaluation to be used in each course and distributes this syllabus to all students enrolled in each class at the beginning of each semester. The syllabus will reflect any and all division requirements peculiar to any given course.

Classroom instruction: The instructor meets punctually at regularly scheduled times and days with each class. The instructor engages the class in activities and assignments designed to help each student meet the objectives and requirements of the course. The instructor provides handouts and other learning aids to reinforce lectures and other methods of instruction.

Evaluation of student performance: The instructor follows the procedures for evaluation of student performance stated on the course syllabus. The instructor returns graded work punctually. The instructor meets with students who are having difficulty meeting the objectives/requirements of a course and counsels them concerning study habits, absences, and other factors which may affect their success in completing the course.

Academic advisement: The instructor meets with those students assigned to him/her for academic advisement. The instructor reviews the advisee’s plan of study and academic progress and assists that student in making appropriate decisions concerning courses and load.

Institutional responsibilities: The instructor attends all meetings of the Division and the general faculty. The instructor serves on college and division committees as assigned.

Professional attitude: The instructor displays a cooperative and collegial demeanor in dealings with other instructors, administrators, and staff. The instructor treats students with courtesy and seeks to be a positive role model.

Professional development: The instructor displays a desire for enhancing his/her knowledge of English and skills in teaching. The instructor demonstrates professional development by taking additional graduate courses, attending professional meetings/conferences, studying issues and trends in the field of English, and/or undertaking projects that require the instructor to master new skills.
Other Special Qualifications/Requirements of the Job:

Master’s degree with at least eighteen semester hours of graduate credit in English OR ability to obtain Master’s Degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in English by 8/15/2023.

The instructor should have graduate and undergraduate transcripts which reflect a breadth and depth of preparation in English studies so that the instructor is competent in teaching all the composition courses and the survey courses in literature.

The instructor must have work experience or academic preparation sufficient to equip him/her to teach with minimal assistance and direct supervision.
