What You'll Do:
Ohio Department of Public Safety - Ohio State Highway Patrol
Report In Location: 1970 W. Broad Street Columbus 43223
Under direct supervision of the Highway Patrol Lieutenant, within the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), processes, examines, & preserves all evidence & property submissions collected from crime scenes or hazardous situations & submitted by internal & external law enforcement agencies to aid in criminal prosecutions in accordance with OSHP Policies & Procedures guided by the American Society of Crime Lab Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD), Ohio Department of Health, internal control procedures & laboratory best practices to ensure the integrity & safety of evidence handling (e.g., analyzes evidence receipt form for incoming evidence submissions to ensure key information is not missing; ensures all evidence &/or property is properly stored, warehoused, & packaged); Receives & manages evidence for entry into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) system (e.g., performs cursory examination of cartridge case evidence to determine best evidence for NIBIN entry; operates the Brass Trax system; maintains all records relating to NIBIN to include casework documentation, data for confirmed hits & acquisitions, monthly statistics reported to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), etc.; maintains a workflow in which firearms evidence is entered into NIBIN & reported in accordance with the ATF Minimum Required Operating Standards (MROS)); Issues NIBIN notifications &/or reports to law enforcement agencies regarding entries &/or results of searches or potential leads; Transports internal & external evidence submitted by agency for analysis; Utilizes the Automated Fingerprint Identification System in order to classify, identify &/or sequence fingerprints via computer or manual system; Examines & verifies National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Entered Recovered Gun (ERG) entries for evidence & or property in accordance with internal control policies & procedures; Operates & maintains proficiency with the U.S. Department of Justice eTrace system; Maintains proficiency with NIBIN instrumentation & database evidence entry.
Oversees evidence management in the laboratory information management system (e.g. verify classification & accuracy of entries, enter updates &/or corrections as needed, maintains history of evidence submissions & releases; responsible for physical management (e.g., packaging, filing, shelving, & inventorying all evidence submissions)); Examine, verify, & validate (e.g., reviewing court orders, case numbers, defendant name, lab number, etc.) requests for destruction of evidence &/or property; Ensures all records & related paperwork concerning evidence disposal, release, &/or handling, is accurate & completed in accordance with applicable state statutes & departmental policies & procedures & generates computerized reports of movement & handling of evidence.
Acts as liaison with county, city, state &/or federal courts & responds to inquiries received from various statewide entities within the law enforcement community regarding paperwork submitted to/from courts, evidence results, submissions, testing, procedures, fees, instrument maintenance & support, etc.; Testifies before courts concerning integrity of evidence chain of custody & all matters related to the evidence; Ensures strict compliance with OSHP Policies & Procedures & the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/ Laboratory Accreditation Board (e.g., complete assignments in accordance with accreditation standard, successfully complete quality control audits, inventories, etc.); Perform other related duties as assigned (e.g., completes special projects, studies, & reporting to help streamline or improve laboratory policies & procedures; represents laboratory with internal &/or external customers; etc.).

Qualifications

Formal education in arithmetic that includes calculating fractions, decimals & percentages & in reading, writing & speaking English; 12 mos. exp. working in a forensic laboratory, biology, medical office laboratory or chemistry laboratory, law enforcement agency or legal environment; 6 mos. trg. or exp. in inventory control (e.g. receiving, storing & dispensing of materials).
