Job Summary
Duration:
Temporary Externally Funded Non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 18 months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.
Basic Function
To carry out advisory duties under the Teagasc/Boortmalt Joint Industry Programme, specifically running a network of malting barley monitor farms, public events, supporting initiatives aimed at discussion group and non-discussion group participants and assisting with on farm advice. This programme will concentrate on improving the technical and financial performance of supplier farms with an overall objective of achieving increased productivity and profitability in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Job Objectives
Develop and run a network of malting barley monitor farms, focus crops and public events.
To help develop and co-ordinate the delivery of agreed messages from the Teagasc/Boortmalt joint program.
Liaise with Boortmalt staff to develop and assist in their agronomic training needs.
Provide and co-ordinate information from research into action orientated farmer messages.
Provide advice to farmers supplying Boortmalt as part of the Teagasc/ Boortmalt joint programme in key areas such as site selection, nitrogen usage, agronomic needs, financial recording and reporting.
Support Boortmalt Sustainability initiatives undertaken in the Teagasc/Boortmalt Joint programme in relation to traceability and sustainability of malting barley.
Support the completion of Nutrient Management Plans by advisors associated with the Teagasc/Boortmalt joint program.
Support Teagasc/Boortmalt initiatives around discussion groups and to non-discussion group suppliers e.g. Farm info events/ workshops/information meetings.
Provide data and write reports on joint program activities.
To use a range of effective advisory methodologies as part of an enterprise team to achieve technology transfer and sustainable client development.
To maintain a high profile for the joint programme through activities across the Boortmalt catchment such as events, publications and public relations.
To assist clients in the analysis and planning of their farm business.
To take responsibility for the marketing of services and contract with clients consistent with the achievement of the area income targets.
To take responsibility for the marketing of training programmes.
Liaison with relevant stakeholders in the industry and education sectors.
To assist management and administrative staff in achieving good governance and risk management through co-operation and adherence to administrative procedures and practices.
To maintain own professional development.
To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
Fully co-operate with the provisions for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of oneself, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.
To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and action plan through adherence to best practice protocols.
Such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a relevant QQI Level 8 Degree in Agriculture Science or equivalent, to include crop husbandry as a major component.
Approved DAFM Pesticide Advisor or will attain such status within 12 months.
Track record working with Irish tillage farmers
