Hodson Bay Group are currently recruiting an experienced Financial Controller for the 4* Sheraton Athlone Hotel located in the center of Athlone town.
The Sheraton Athlone Hotel is owned and managed by the Hodson Bay Group and operated under a franchise agreement with the largest hotel group in the world, Marriott Hotels & resorts. Our other properties include Hodson Bay Hotel, Galway Bay Hotel and the Hyatt Centric in Dublin. This position represents an exciting opportunity for a commercially focused qualified Accountant to work closely with the Managing Director and report directly to the Board of Directors. The candidate will be accountable for the financial management and control of the day-to-day operations of the Hotel. All staff from directors to operations work by these three pillars of respect.
Competencies and Experience
- Recognised professional accountancy qualification
- Minimum of 3 years post qualification experience
- High degree of computer literacy. Experience of Opera Pegasus and Opera Hotel Management system preferable
- Highly motivated, self-starter willing to meet strict deadlines and time constraints.
- Experience in managing a small team and motivating line management.
- Ability to clearly and concisely communicate financial matters to department managers

The job description can be categorised into three broad areas:
Management Function
Working closely with Operational Management on various aspects of the operation. Responsibilities will include:
- Preparation, presentation and participation in all Management meetings of the Hotel.
- Maximisation of Gross Profits Percentage in Food and Beverage areas.
- Maximisation of Room Revenue - working with the Revenue Manager to ensure the Hotel is achieving its best room rate and occupancy
- Control and reporting of wages percentage
- Ensuring the relevant controls are in place for the purchasing and delivering of all hotel products
- Control and reporting on overhead levels through the Hotel.
- Setting and ensuring achievements of various management targets within the Hotel.
Corporate Function
This will involve dealing with all external matters pertaining to the operation of the Company and responsibility will include: -
- Liaising with outside advisors including the company solicitors, bankers and auditors.
- Preparation of Grant applications
- Hotel Insurance-
o Control of correspondence on claims
o Ensure implementation of procedures to prevent claims arising
Accounting Function
The Financial Controller will have ultimate responsibility for all accounting functions within the Hotel, and with the assistance of the Accounts staff, the responsibilities will include: -
- Preparation of monthly management accounts and cash flow statements
- Setting up, implementation and maintenance of all accounting and internal control records.
- Production of accurate accounting information on a weekly and monthly basis within specific time limits.
- Setting up and implementing of front of house systems to ensure efficient income control procedures are in place for all departments within the Hotel.
- Debt Collection.
- Preparation of annual budgets to detailed specification including weekly and monthly budgets for specific areas within the Hotels.
- Creditors control
- Setting up and familiarisation of IT systems throughout the Hotel
