The mission of this position is to help Church members fulfill their divinely appointed responsibility to discover their families through family history methods, submit their names to the temple for saving ordinances, and to help bring souls unto CHRIST.

A research consultant 3 provides high quality service to support the initiatives of the Family History Department, archives and records custodians and assists patrons throughout the world.

The research consultant 3 provides genealogical analysis, consultation, research, instruction, and translation/transcription on records, resources, and research procedures based on the geographical area. Including creation of and application of data strategies, gap analysis- analyzing content coverage, condition, and genealogical value of records in archives, societies, partners, FHD and online.

Responsibilities - research and analysis for Family History Department Leadership including European field relations management and headquarters-based homeland leadership. Answers genealogical questions for leadership and provides tree coverage analysis and strategy needed for business purposes. Provides training on records and resources based on the geographical area. Provides genealogical expertise in development of products and services for homelands and associated diasporas. Develops reports and strategies on records, resources, and research procedures. Professional Development: Increases domain and research strategy expertise by keeping current on procedures and developments in the profession through study, attending workshops, conferences and training sessions.


BA degree in family, local history, languages, archival sciences, or related field.

4 to 7 years full-time professional experience in a library or genealogical research experience, or a certified genealogist credential plus at least 8 years of experience. Must quickly learn and apply proven genealogical strategies in researching intermediate records & resources. Knowledge of records and resources as determined by geographic area. Develop sound genealogical conclusions from records using direct and indirect evidence. Proficient in compiling well documented pedigrees and able to use records and resources to solve research problems involving population movement, naming practices, laws and decrees, jurisdiction changes, lack of records, etc. Excellent patron interaction, language & grammar skills to publish locally and regionally. Meet dept. presentation & training standards with skills in PowerPoint & other presentation media. Able to understand history & culture of geographic/subject area from mid 1700s. Proficient & able to teach Microsoft Office, FamilySearch products, & genealogical web sites. Ability to decipher difficult to read records Read basic records in two or more foreign languages
