The Head Porter will be responsible for:

  • The leadership and management of approximately 90 Portering staff in the provision of all related services ensuring high standards are achieved throughout.
  • Ensure Portering staff recognises the patient as an individual and that the patient’s needs, comfort, privacy and dignity are given the highest priority.
  • Work directly with all Service Managers, Heads of Departments, Ward Managers etc and members of the management team and Hygiene Services Teams on specific targets.
  • Develop effective and robust collaborative /team working relationships with other managers/services in maintaining a comfortable and safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Ensure effective Management of relevant policies including the Hospitals Waste Policy.
  • Ensure that staff are courteous and respectful at all times and present a professional appearance at all times.
  • Actively monitor and audit the service delivery.
  • Develop a working knowledge of HIQA standards as they apply to the role.
  • Motivate team members by agreeing goals and objectives

Administrative Duties

  • The post holder must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of IT systems and an ability to use computer software to record and retrieve information.
  • Work with the Deputy Head Porter, in managing staff duties to ensure the smooth running of services include rostering arrangements, daily workloads and ensuring that service requirements are met. Arrange cross cover for porters for annual leave/sick leave as and when required.
  • Have line manager knowledge of all HSE Policies and procedures.
  • Record, monitor and approve all leave types.
  • Monitor unplanned /planned absence and ensure adequate cover is available to meet service need.
  • Ensure that staff attendance is managed as per HSE policies procedures and guidelines. Convene return to work meetings for staff following absenteeism.
  • Ensure that records and time returns of staff are kept and that any unauthorised absences are reported and managed.
  • Ensure that pay returns are accurate and returned in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that monthly reports are provided to demonstrate the effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Compile detailed reports on aspects of the Portering Service when the need arises.
  • Arrange Portering services team meetings with Portering & MTA staff.
  • Provide Portering representation at relevant committees and groups.
  • Support the development and implementation of written policies, procedures & guidelines.
  • Communicate to Porters & Multi Task Attendants on new policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Participate in relevant hospital audits.
