An opportunity exists for a Lab Section Leader. We seek an experienced Medical Technologists (Med Tech, MT, MLS) to join our Clinical Laboratories in the Microbiology Lab.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

  • Education: Requires a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology and ASCP Certification.

  • Experience: Two to three years progressively more responsible related work experience in a leadership role

Performing over 220,000 tests per year, the Micro lab at SJMHS is one of the largest in the state of Michigan. This is a state-of-the-art microbiology lab where you will be able to utilize your experience and skills, but also to learn and grow within this unique field. Located in Saint Joseph Mercy Health System Ann Arbor you will be centrally located to the art, culture, academics, entertainment and activities that Ann Arbor provides.

POSITION PURPOSE

In addition to general Microbiology, Medical Technologist duties, acts as a resource person as relates to problem solving and workflow organization. Coordinates the flow of information between Microbiology and other lab areas, pathologists and lab manager. Exercise functional supervision over the section staff on an as needed basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts as a resource person regarding the activities of the Microbiololgy personnel and supervises the operations of the Microbiology laboratory with direction from the lab manager and section head of Microbiology.

  • Serves as a contact person and problem solver for laboratory and clients concerning problems that arise in regard to specimens, requests and results that do not require intervention of a manager or section head.

  • Exercises functional supervision over the lab staff by determining work procedures, assigning duties and ensuring appropriate staffing levels on an as needed basis.

  • Establishes and maintains pertinent files, procedure manuals according to hospital policy and/or legal requirements.

  • Participates in the interviewing of prospective employees, as well as the hiring, evaluation and disciplinary process of employees. Makes recommendations for promotion, demotion or termination of employees.

  • Assists in the training and orientation of new employees.

  • Notifies appropriate personnel of unusual problems, such as equipment malfunctions and quality control aberrations, in accordance with departmental or section policy and procedure.

  • Assists the manager and section head in the development and implementation of section and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Consults with employees to assist in solving technical and operational problems, takes unresolved problems to the manager or section head.

  • Organizes workflow and assigns specimen priority.

  • Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.

  • Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees and visitors to St Joseph Mercy Hospital. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.

  • Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management
