BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: Job Code 9201; Range 08; Pay: $16.72/hour; 40 hours weekly: This is protective services work at state park beaches with responsibility for the protection and safety of visitors at the swimming facilities. An important feature of this work is recognizing potential dangers and hazards that an individual may be placed in and correcting the situation to prevent an accident or drowning. Work is performed under immediate supervision with the incumbent applying clear rules and guidelines independently.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: At least sixteen (16) years of age and have successfully completed the Lifeguard Competency Test within the last year. Possession of a current/valid Lifeguard Certification, current/valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification, and current/valid First Aid Certification; and successful completion of the Lifeguard Academy.

The following general information pertains to seasonal employment at Maine State Parks:

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older (Lifeguards must be 16 or older)
  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or have legal authority to work in the U.S.
  • In general, housing is not available.
  • Most positions are scheduled to work 40 hours each week, with weekends and some holidays required.
  • Parks seasonal positions are required to wear uniforms which are provided by the agency.

Since many of our parks are seasonal, park staff may not be available to take your call during the early spring months. If you are unable to reach the park manager at a park, please contact our Northern Region Office at 207-941-4821


Job offer to a new hire is conditional upon verification of credentials, criminal record, and driver’s license check if applicable. Three references must be made available at the interview to include at least one work-related reference. Anyone meeting the minimum qualifications of the position may apply.

  • Work-Life Balance – Rest is essential. Take time for yourself using 13 paid holidays (AFTER three (3) months of employment), accrual of sick leave (AFTER three (3) months or equivalent of employment) and accrual of vacation leave (AFTER three (3) months or equivalent of employment).

  • Health Insurance Coverage– The State of Maine pays 85%-100% of employee-only premiums ($9,893.52-$11,057.52 annual value), depending on salary (and pro-rated if work is less than 40 hours per week). Use this chart to find the premium costs for you and your family, including the percentage of dependent coverage paid by the State.

  • Dental Insurance– The State of Maine pays 100% of employee-only dental premiums ($350.40 annual value (and pro-rated if work is less than 40 hours per week).

  • Retirement Plan– The State of Maine contributes 13.16% of pay to the Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MainePERS), on behalf of the employee. Acting Capacity Employees are required to contribute to MainePers while working but do not obtain state service credit until the enter a classified position. Contributions can be withdrawn when the employees leave their positions.

  • Gym Membership Reimbursement– Improve overall health with regular exercise and receive up to $40 per month to offset this expense (must be eligible for State benefits to participate).
