Materials Characterisation Scientist
The role is especially focused on material science, surface morphology and deep understanding of mechanical properties of coated stacks/layers and AR coating of products. Experience in properties such as scratch hardness, Young’s modulus, indentation hardness etc. Experience in range testing instruments AFM, SEC, Ref-Index, Hardness measurement, surface contact, microscopy.
Responsibilities:
- Improve existing or develop new mechanical test methods for performance testing on products.
- Responsible for physical analytical equipment in terms of ensuring they are maintained and calibrated, trouble-shoot any issues, and make sure consumable supplies are available. The relevant analytical equipment includes microscopes, Microhardness, nanoindentor, and scratch tester, SEM, surface energy, Filmetrics and tensile instruments.
- Provide training and oversight to R&D and production laboratory personnel to ensuring good understanding and correct operation of analytical equipment.
- Support R&D and other functions in performing mechanical testing and provide technical input on Quality and engineering controls.
- Interpret, document and effectively communicate test results. Work with the R&D product development teams as required in determining suitability of tests needed and data interpretation.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of work completed.
- Lead the mechanical characterisation and predictive modelling of coating stacks and develop methodologies to measure properties such as hardness, creep, layer thickness, scratch to support current and NG products.
- Develop bench methods to reflect real world wearers and transportation studies.
- Implement measurement instrumentation to measure differentiations in similar product families for mechanical performances.
Requirements:
- Minimum Level 8 qualification in Materials, Physics, or Analytical Sciences
- At least 3 years industrial experience in a similar role.
- Good knowledge in Mechanical engineering with material science.
- Skilled in presenting and disseminating technical data to senior management
- Curious and rigorous person, and have a major ability for problem solving
- Knowledge of operating and maintaining laboratory equipment
- An interest in new test method development
- Knowledge of quality control systems
- Strong team player
- Good communication skills
