Job description
The Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia seeks candidates for a Vascular & Endovascular Surgery faculty position. This position will offer the opportunity for vascular investigation with balance of effort in the clinical care of its vascular surgical population and participation in student, resident, fellow and post-graduate mentorship and teaching. The selected candidate will further scholarly achievements with the goal of independent funding and promotion within the School of Medicine based on these activities. Candidates desiring either basic/translational or health services research funded careers will be considered. Rank and tenure status are dependent upon qualifications.
The Department of Surgery and the School of Medicine at UVA have a long history of providing a culture of investigation, mentorship and collegiality. The UVA Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center is a robust resource for research support. The UVA Department of Public Health Sciences, as well as the UVA School of Data Science also represent vigorous avenues for interconnected team science. In addition, the department has an ACGME accredited General Surgery Residency Program with a strong national reputation for academic excellence. The Vascular Surgery training program is outstanding and currently consists of three 5+2 (accredited independent pathway) fellows.
The University of Virginia Health System is a major referral institution with several system growth initiatives in process. We care for patients with the full spectrum of vascular disease. Our ambulatory and inpatient practices focus on complex vascular surgery, including open and endovascular management of aortic pathologies, lower extremity ischemia, venous diseases, vascular access, and cerebrovascular disease. State-of-the-art endovascular hybrid suites are operational with high utilization. In 2020, a new tower expansion opened with multiple new hybrid operating rooms, negative flow interventional and catheterization suites, and modern cardiovascular intensive care and ward units. The successful candidate would participate in and assist in all elements of vascular surgical practice in our team-and-center-based care programs, including ongoing efforts in our aortic center, limb-preservation program, venous center, and hemodialysis access system. Our group is integral in care relating to UVA as a level I Trauma Center and an accredited Stroke Center.
Candidates must have an MD, have completed or be currently completing, a vascular fellowship or residency. Candidates must be board-eligible or board-certified in vascular surgery and have expertise in the care of vascular patients. Possession of or eligibility for RVT or RVPI is required as we also manage multiple Diagnostic Vascular Laboratory sites. Interested individuals must possess a strong interest in a career in academic medicine as demonstrated through past experience with research or teaching pursuits and a prepared proposal for an academic career path.
