Job Duties
Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but not limited to:
Sign Installation and Maintenance – Install and maintain ground-mounted and overhead signs and other traffic control devices in compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Follow guidelines and policies governing miss utility clearances for sign installations. Interpret roadway plans and sketches for new sign installation.
Job Safety – Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Identify workplace safety hazards and make suggestions for improvement. Wear proper personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA and VOSHA, etc.). Use equipment properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Maintain clean, orderly and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
Emergency Operations – Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and clean up after accidents. Provide traffic control.
Minimum Qualifications
Working knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and techniques.
Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding traffic control devices.
Experience performing heavy manual labor.
Ability to read and interpret plans and sketches.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions, read and interpret work plans and specifications, and complete accurate work documentation.
Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of specialty equipment and complex machinery used in sign installation and messaging.
Skill in the use and maintenance of hand and power tools, as well as light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
Safety shoes required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in roadway sign installation, maintenance and repairs. Overhead sign installation is a plus.
Experience in emergency operations to include snow and ice removal, storms and debris clean-up.
Experience in the installation and maintenance of various types of traffic control devices.
Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
All candidates selected for an interview may be required to perform a skills demonstration as part of the interview process.
